Citizen complaint of the day: Jeering, maskless out of towners in the Seaport

A concerned MD files a 311 report about the situation along streets like Seaport Boulevard on the weekends:

I am an icu physician and have been working tirelessly with a dedicated group of colleagues since early March to keep residents of our state alive. it has been my pleasure and my calling. I am a resident of beacon hill and have noticed a troubling trend on the weekends. Mask compliance plummets when people I assume are visitors shirk the mask mandate. The seaport last night was a disgrace. Virtually no masks and my friends and I were actually jeered for wearing ours. Can you start ticketing?

Is the masking RX? Ever think of practicing in Communist China? Lots of cops there.
Take a couple of aspirin and here's some cream for that butthurt rash.

Your mask keeps me safe. Those who don't mask are kill people.

is what that doctor is trying to do. Why don't you take yourself to one of those COVID parties in Florida, so we can read about you in a couple of weeks?

"Being safe" can be done by maintaining proper social distancing.
Not snitching on annoying protestors.

On behalf of all the healthcare workers who are assuming all the extra risk for people like you, who refuse to wear a mask, and social distance, and think it's just 'butthurt' - fuck you.

I hear they are doing well with the no mask thing.

Is far lower than MA, CT, NY, NJ. And it nursing home deaths rate is a fraction of the slaughter that occurred in the northeast. MA ranks particularly bad, worse than NY. The FL governor concentrated his efforts on nursing homes rather than forcing a lock down on everybody. The percentage of people getting deathly ill and-or dying from COVID 19 is quite small. And it's continuing to drop.

And catching the virus outdoors is much, much less likely than indoors. Telling people to stay indoors was a mistake. It's even more of a mistake now that we're in summer.

Death is a lagging statistic when it comes to Covid-19 - most seriously ill people don't just die right away, they linger for awhile.

So give Florida time, thanks to their idiot governor. The one possible saving grace might be if nursing homes there learn from our example and do a better job of sealing themselves off.

Even if you wear it over your mouth and nose.

Do you think that not wearing a mask is medically prescribed?

Even if you think public health is a communist plot, what's the "personal freedom" argument for harassing a complete stranger for wearing a mask to protect themselves or other people?

Yes, free speech gives you the right to insult health care professionals for trying to keep people safe. It also gives me the right to tell you that freedom of speech does not mean anyone is required to jeer at strangers. Freedom doesn't require you to insult people who are wearing masks to protect themselves and the people around them from a disease that has already killed at least 130,000 Americans.

Reminds me of the nurses story while standing in line at a supermarket...

Lady behind her: You don't need that hon.
Nurse: Well I work with Covid patients all day
Are you sure I should take it off?

Why are people so bent out of shape about mask orders but not the requirement to wear pants? No where in the constitution is the government given the power to require pants in public, yet, go around nude and the police will arrest you in short order. They won't even give you a disposable pair of pants until you can buy your own.

Masks are the new pants.

It's a slippery slope. First it was pants, then it was shirts and shoes. Now it's masks. What's next? Hats and gloves?! Before you know it, all of our freedoms will be gone! That's what makes being America so great. We don't need big government telling us what to do! Why are we letting the pandemic win?! Wearing a mask tells the virus that we are afraid. We are not afraid! The virus doesn't stand a chance against our resolve as freedom-loving Americans! [/sarcasm]

They inject the 5G with the vaccine. I thought everyone knew that.

I wish they'd come up with a more "plausible" conspiracy theory.

Like the pandemic is a way to get people to voluntarily give the "vast conspiracy" DNA samples so they can create a database of every human so they can track every man, woman, and child in the world AND continue to their monitor and tweak their eugenics experiments that started in 1918.

Like what is 5G even supposed to do? It's a wireless network protocol, which is easily defeated by my tinfoil hat.

If you pray the right prayer to the correct Jesus, it will protect you from the unholy virus. Choose wisely!

To be fair, it depends on the state. In Maine, the way the law is written, people with female genitalia have been found to be able walk around nude, as they are deamed to not have "External Genitalia".

I also think, adding masks to the "Shirt and Shoes" part of the health code is also a reasonable way to look at it. No one cries about their constitutional rights when they have to wear shoes to go into a store.

Please crawl back into the stupid hole from which you came and we can cover that so no more highly infectious Qpidity leaks out.

Put on a mask or stay the fuck home, honey. Those are your options, the same as with wearing clothing in public.

You want cops to start enforcing mask rules. They cant enforce vandalism laws, quality of life crimes , drug transactions and have been spit at and assaulted with bricks. Minority officers and female officers have been taunted with language that would constitute hate crimes if they were not wearing uniforms. Thank you Doctor for the work you and the heroes in hospitals have done but please don't ask the cops to do more while those cowards in city hall and the golden dome cower and surrender to the mob.

Of America's black population, maybe the majority, live below the Mason-Dixon? S.C., Georgia, Alabama, MS all have 25% - almost 40% black populations. All southern states have much, much larger black populations than almost all non-southern states. MA is less than 10% black. California is 7.5% black (as is Los Angeles; S.F. is less than 5% black). Black people will be allowed to freely go back and forth?

And I grew up in majority non-Hispanic-white (I'm white non-Hispanic) places. Lived in big cities my entire life. Most black people I know and have known like the south, like southerners (including white) more than northherners, especially northeast northerners. I concur. Say what you will about politics, but southerners are a much more pleasant people.

the Seaport was a disgrace long before COVID-19.

I have been trying to figure out why people are being so weird about masks and why it is somehow a political thing about "freedoms". It's really just common sense. The government shouldn't even have to be involved. If it's cold outside you put on a coat. the government doesn't TELL you to, you do it because it makes sense. Same with masks. If there's something contagious going on, wear one. It probably makes sense to wear one even when there isn't a pandemic, but that's another discussion. Even if it turns out masks were no help at all, at least it was an attempt at squelching the virus, and that's something. Be a member of the human race for heaven's sake. And frankly, to all you knee-jerkers out there, I don't think it has a lot to do with Trump. People would have made it the "my freedoms are being taken away" thing even if we had the most benign of presidents.

The Covidiot in Chief shared a tweet from Federalist bottom-feeder Molly McCann that pushed every single right-wing insecurity button. She called wearing masks a "culture of silence, slavery, and social death". They are exactly this messed up, this nervous and frightened, and cynical scum like McCann know exactly how to pull the strings and make 'em dance.

Go stand with the college crowd in February trying to get into a bar. Very few coats to be seen. I realize there is a practical aspect of not wanting to lose your coat or pay to check it, but not freezing to death is far more important to me.

up
Voting closed 0

How often does someone freeze to death because they went out for the evening without a coat?

The difference between coats and masks is that coats make you comfortable, while masks make you slightly uncomfortable but save lives. In other words, there's no immediate negative sensation you feel from not wearing a mask, so someone who thinks only about their own short-term needs could decide they don't need one. It takes some trust in science and expert advice, and empathy for others, to realize that masks are important.

I believe there's a long time commenter on this here website who both lives in the Seaport and thinks masks are some mix of tyranny and nonsense. Doesn't strike me as a person who would actively jeer their fellow man though.

Boston has done a good job so far but there are many, many residents here who will wear a mask only when required and happily skip it at any opportunity.

Did I hear my name?

I don't think they are tyranny by any means, so you probably mean someone else.

It's a tired trope to whine about the spread of Covid in the Seaport and South Boston when it's just not happening so I don't really gaf any longer.

Having said that, I hope none of you have to be treated by this doctor because obviously he/she can't understand simple math, much less medical charts.

Also, it's only masks outside that I see as nonsense.

Of course, is we were actually serious about fighting this disease, we would have had things in place so that 5200 old people in nursing homes didn't die within a two month span, but everyone just wants this to be easy and pain free and make themselves feel better by pointing out perceived weaknesses in others.

You will never get Covid while being outside. You will never be hospitalized with Covid by being outside. You will never die of Covid by being outside.

What's so difficult to understand?

Look at the daily historical data from the past four months and make your own decision. You don't have to be a doctor or a denier or anything else. The ability to read and make sensible decisions is all you need.

sure, it might not solve the mask problem, it might not solve Covid, but why not give it a shot?

Because we like to think those living inside Boston’s city limits are perfect and that those nasty suburbanites are responsible for all of our ills

Go for a walk down Broadway in Southie to take a trip over to the crowded M street beach. You’ll see less than 50% wearing masks. Must be out of towners...
