This is a great building for a restaurant. When I lived over the bridge in LA, we used to come for the Allston Depot's mid-week specials that were cheap and delicious. (And even though you KNEW you were sitting close to the tracks, when a train came flying by, you'd jump a bit.)

There is already a station about a (longish) block away.
Seems kind of redundant, since Boston Landing is half a mile down the street and they intend to build West Station a half mile in the other direction. (And this location is way too small for the kind of transportation hub that West Station is supposed to be.) Plus, you don't really get that much value out of the building itself, since you'd have to build a whole new platform. If this part of the commuter rail converted to semi-rapid transit then maybe you could have another station between Boston Landing and West Station, since it's certainly a high density neighborhood, but turning the building back into a train station would be complicated.

Pizzeria Regina = Climate Change is a fabrication, huh? And we wonder why some people won't put on a f'in mask in public.
The author of that "study" asked people to send in pictures of weather stations and then gauged in his own estimation (not via any reproducible criteria) whether that weather station was "encroached on" by an "urban situation" (basically he looked at pictures and decided for himself if they were in a heat island or not). Again, at no time did he go to any of these weather stations or have anyone take any measurements around them. He then write a blog about it.
However, NOAA scientists still took his claim seriously. They investigated their models based on his purported conclusion and published a peer-reviewed paper regarding the issue. Their conclusion was based on repeated evidence that, in fact, if their models were doing anything wrong, it was that they were averaging over time and location such that they were LOWER than they should likely be, but that it was acceptable risk in the model: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2010JGRD..11511108M/abstract

While not the best pizza in the area, it was still pretty decent. And being able to get pizza and beer together was nice. And in better non-virus days it was a great place to take kids for a dinner, where they would get a kick out of the trains passing. It always seemed really busy with that kind of crowd - and its parking lot probably helped as well. But I guess they are not getting enough takeout/delivery orders to keep going.
They must have been surviving on alcohol sales is all I can figure. Because whenever I went in there for pick-up since the lockdown (it was my friends' favorite place to order from, not really mine), there was always a large number of delivery drivers and others picking up inside.
However, their quality of service really suffered. I was supposed to pick up 3 pizzas, and the first two boxes were correct when I peeked, but opening the third without spilling the other 2 was too hard, so I drove to my friends' house. Opened the third box when I got there, and where a pepperoni pizza should have been was an entirely empty box. Not even the wrong pizza...just no pizza. How do you close a box like that and hand it out? I mean that just gross negligence/incompetence. If they did that badly at least once, my guess is that wasn't the only issue there.
When one business closes another one takes its place.
There must be a few years delay this time.
Very sad to see yet another stable restaurant business succumb to SARS COV-2 restrictions.
I hope that unsatisfied demand will allow any new restaurants to have an easier time getting past the first couple years of operation. I have a feeling that there may be some very small commercial kitchen and food truck operations waiting for a chance to start brick and mortar operations with table service.

I've been going to that site for 15+ years. I think it was at its best as a sports bar.
The caboose (or whatev) was a nice special events room. Good sight lines for many TVs. Big bar. Big space. Divided up in such a way that it doesn't get too loud even on a Saturday in the fall when people are watching 10 different games.
Sports bars aren't very compatible with COVID to be sure, but...
The building's exterior, and interior roof support system, have landmark protections. It's a truly great space, and should continue to serve social activities, distanced or otherwise.

never enjoyed the food at the Sports Depot/Captain Fishbones. Regina's was an unsung gem in Allston.. A bar you could always find a spot at, even when allston bars had lines to get in (especially those early sept weekends when all the students are back). And a late night slice that wasn't greasy and gross. RIP
