Developer proposes seven-story residential building in Barry's Corner in Allston, across street from an apartment building it put up

Samuels & Associates today told the BPDA it will soon file plans for a seven-story, 270-unit residential building at 180 Western Ave., where Stone Hearth Pizza used to be, and across the street from the developer's Continuum apartment building, which includes a Trader Joe's.

The proposed building would also have first-floor retail and restaurant space, which Samuels says will be a boon in the new neighborhood that Harvard, which owns much of the surrounding land, hopes to turn the once quiet Barry's Corner into.

Would the new 200,000-square-foot building be "transit oriented" and "transformative?" Of course.

We now have a shitty economy and one would think that would call for more affordable places for people that want to live in the city to live in, no?

Well as we're seeing now, supply and demand impact price. Rents have dropped since there are fewer students here. Building more housing, as this project is doing, will have a similar effect.

As if we don't already have a shitty economy and people aren't already being pushed out because of rent prices. Guess we just "want" to be poor, right?

...is mentioned, too. Of course, the area didn't need it until Harvard bought up lots of property, forced out the tenants, and sat on the acreage while it figured out what to do. And then had to put everything on hold once the financial crisis hit.

Wow, it wasn't that long ago that the supposed neighborhood association freaked out about this pizza place replacing an abandoned gas station.

I guess they're now wishing the pizza place had stayed in business.
