Draining the botulism lagoon in the Public Garden

Public Garden drained due to botulism

Update: The city reports draining is now finished and muck removal begun, with the goal of having the Lagoon filled up with fresh water by next weekend.

Damaskin didn't get super close this morning to the Public Garden Lagoon, which the city is draining because of a toxic buildup of botulism-causing bacteria that has been paralyzing and killing ducks. Once all the water runs out, crews will scoop out the muck and then refill the lagoon with fresh water.

The City is doing what it has to do, obviously, but where are the poor ducks going to go, in the meantime?

Perhaps they can run a detail to get them across Storrow Drive to the River? Or maybe just over to the Frog Pond.

Trying to cross Beacon from the Public Garden to get to the Esplanade is indeed a sh*t-show if you have only feet to get you there, but fortunately ducks have wings!

And the adults, at least, can fly. Easiest trip to the river, ever.

I heard on the NBC 10 news the other night that over 200 ducks had died. Is that documented anywhere?

Why don't the line the bottom with river stones and put into one of those recirculating floating fountain things DCR uses on the Esplanade to oxygenate the water and to stop algae growth?

What is being done for the surving ducks and swans? City needs to step up. Just because the Swan Boats and Frog Pond aren't making money from tourism means just let everything rot?

They probably put the swans back in the hotel when the first ducks started dying.
