Darn Acme boats never go when you want them to

Coyote on a boat

Massachusetts Environmental Police report its officers responded to the Volunteer Yacht Club in Lynn yesterday, where they found an otherwise unharmed coyote stuck inside a docked boat - and that, along with the Swampscott animal control officer, successfully removed the canine and release it back into the wild.

Obviously, local coyotes must be in the beginning stages of developing their own navy. Or else they're looking to arrange an evening cruise in the harbor (wine with choice of pigeon or rabbit).

Roadrunner or Rabbit?

I agree this is obviously a ploy by the Coyote Liberation Front to add a naval component to the TLF. It looks like they've resolved their differences.

I had to go and look this up to reinforce my memory: The "Wile E. Coyote: Genius" bit was mainly when he appeared in a few Bugs Bunny cartoons -- he had a very refined, elitist accent and attitude to match, which of course made his comeuppance all the sweeter. But there was at least one episode with the Roadrunner when he did his "genius" shtick: A couple of kids are shown watching Coyote-v-Roadrunner on TV, and one of them wonders aloud why Wile E. is so fixated on the damn bird anyway; Wile E. 'splains it all.
Of course, there was a wonderful interlude on "Cheers" in which the philosophical underpinnings of Coyote-v-Roadrunner are discussed:

I'm kind of ashamed sometimes that I can remember all this crap but not any of Shakespeare's sonnets.

Certainly in terms of social, cultural and artistic satire, he was Bard-like. (Although I have to give credit to Friz Freleng for "Dough for the Do-Do.")

These stories have a foundation in Apache and Navaho folklore. Usually these are more bawdy (and no mail order supplies are involved). ;-)

One of Chuck Jones's ground rules for the Coyote/Roadrunner series was that, other than
an ocassional 'Ouch' or "Grunt', the Coyote was to never speak.

My personal belief is that one of the reasons Jones paired Wile E.Coyote with Bugs Bunny in order to give Coyote a chance to speak.

Several years after that, there was a cartoon, Hare Breadth Hurry, where Bugs Bunny stood in for the Road Runner. It allowed insight and editorial commentary on the Coyote's actions from the Roadrunner's point of view without breaking the rule that the Roadrunner was only allowed to say 'Meep Meep."

That the roadrunner went right through it.

The TLF has hired a mercenary navy.

Release it back into the wild? What exactly does that mean? And where is this wild?

How did the coyote end up on the boat in the first place?

"Release it back into the wild". What does that mean?

So, the first word is the verb. That's the action. To release an animal from animal control's custody, they will usually open its cage and let to run out without catching it again. "It", of course, is gender neutral for the coyote. "Back" is relative to where it is now. We presume it wasn't born and raised on the boat in Lynn and that it came from "the wild", so putting it back in "the wild" means it's going back where it came from. "Into the wild" modifies where it's going back to, as previously mentioned.

And where is this wild?

Well, some say the wild died when we tamed The West. Some say we never really tamed The West and it's still the Wild West. But others generally mark the edges of civilization where nature takes over and we allow it to grow without invasion of modern life as where the wild things are. Once you get out past 128, we have plenty of places we purposefully keep most people out of and don't allow development to keep it wild. For example, all around the Quabbin there are wildlife areas managed by the Division of Fisheries & Wildlife like the Phillipston Wildlife Management Area (3300 acres mostly untouched).

I'm sure he's hanging out in one of them...if he's not on his way back to the dock to find the guy who lied to him about a free boat ride.

So, what if it was from Lynn?
