Dozen BU students suspended for being at raucous, violent parties where people disregarded Covid-19 rules

BU Today reports 12 students were suspended for the rest of the fall semester and five were given lesser punishments because of their attendance at one of three parties that featured close-contact bare facedness as well as the more traditional "underage drinking, physical assault, and disturbing the peace."

The three parties all took place off campus in Allston the afternoon and night of Oct. 3. None of the students have shown signs of infection, but the university said students knew the school would brook no nonsense this year.

The suspended students won't get their tuition refunded and will be on "deferred suspension" next semester - any rules infraction will mean immediate suspension again. The other five students were placed on deferred suspension for this semester.

And you certainly can't stop underage drinking.

Colleges and universities could and should strongly enforce the rules against having large gatherings of people in one place, both indoors and outdoors, and do much more to curb underage drinking. It seems to me that you're saying that we have to accept unnecessary amounts of illness and death whether we want to or not. Considering the fact that most of these college students despise Donald Trump and his Administration in Washington, these students are sure imitating and acting a lot like Trumpians. Isn't it weird that people often become like what they despise most.

if everyone wears a mask? There is too much potential for serious error.

Statistically, they're killing people in Boston, and they know it.

Expel the worthless brats.

And Boston should look at criminal charges.

And they know it. The student caught weren't even COVID positive.

Adults in the city of Boston who disregard the mask and social distancing people are "killing" people. These people are the ones who are not being tested and don't give a shit.

Go after all the family gathering and social gatherings of adults. Stop trying to blame college kids for what is a much, much bigger problem in this country.

Everyone was jumping on the BC football team and their postgame celebration in the locker room. Since then....

The highest positivity rate for testing in a week has been 0.25% for the campus

5 out of 6 people who play a single round of Russian Roulette with a six shot revolver, will tell you it is a harmless game.

People who say, “it’s completely OK that I drove drunk because as it turns out nobody got hurt,” simply don’t understand probability or abstract reasoning

simply don’t understand probability or abstract reasoning

It's arrogant to say people "don't understand probability" while comparing Russian Roulette (chance of death 16%) to COVID (chance of death around 0.002% for people aged 15-24).

It does not matter whether the students in question were Covid-negative OR positive! That doesn't make these students immune to catching the Covid-19 virus, and passing it onto other people without realizing it, because a person who's infected with Covid-19 can still be asymptomatic.

Having said all of the above, the whole point is that the students who are not positive are putting themselves at risk for Covid-19 and other people at risk as well, because any student who gets it, whether they're symptomatic or asymptomatic, end up passing it onto other people. They also put their families, friends, and neighbors at risk, as well as adults over 65, whether they have medical conditions or not.

These college students are adults, and therefore old enough to vote, serve in the military, marry/buy a house/receive medical treatment without parental consent, be tried for and charged with whatever they get arrested for in an adult court, as opposed to a juvenile court. Therefore, they're old enough to understand why these rules for mask wearing, social distancing, and rules against having large gatherings of people in one place, especially indoors.

These students don't deserve sympathy, because they're way old enough to understand the consequences of their actions and behavior. Good for BU for suspending these scofflaw students and not refunding their tuition.

These scofflaw college students contribute just as much to the problems as other scofflaws, and they, like other scofflaws, need to be punished. I have no sympathy for the suspended BU students.

College students do not get expelled in this day and age. They (and their parents dishing out all the money) are viewed as "customers".

"Could you describe the ruckus, sir? Was it raucous?"

Suspended without refund means 12 * $29,000 = $348,000 for BU. Profit!

That's not how budgets and expenditures work...
