Developer proposes replacing nondescript storefront at Cross Street entrance to the North End with a boutique hotel

Developer William Caulder says he will soon file plans with the BPDA for a six-story, 135-room hotel on Cross Street between Salem and Endicott streets, along the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Caulder's proposal would replace the current one-story building and parking lot there, according to a letter of intent filed with the BPDA.

The proposed hotel would have ground-floor space for two restaurants, as well as a rooftop dining terrace.

Caulder says he would also create a walkway to connect the Greenway with Cutillo Park.

...it used to house Maria's bakery, RIP.
Without Maria's, it can all go as far as I'm concerned.

Google Street View has shots of that block almost every year from 2007 to 2019. Every storefront has turned over at least once and some three or four times during that interval. Also, almost every shot has a Sysco truck in it, indicative of the quality (cough) of the fare available in those establishments. Well, maybe the bank and nails place don't use those products.

The block where the proposed hotel would go was the longtime home of j pace and Maria’s pastry.

The presence of Sysco trucks on the adjacent block has more to do with the fact that it was one of the few places larger trucks could actually park For a long time to unload without getting a ticket.

As for the proposal, getting open air access to Cutillo Park should be the Absolute minimum starting point. The building section of the parcel is on land taken from the park. The building has put an ugly face to the park- basically doing nothing but placing trash there, a fact which over the years has contributed to the park’s decline (though there have been recent neighborhood efforts to bring attention to the park.

One aspect of the current building though, was that at least It did not block most afternoon/evening sun. If 6 stories go here, goodbye park sunshine...

Existing structures are single-storey and abut the Greenway, the developer should prepare for strong opposition from multiple parties.
