Officials block off Dorchester hellmouth for now

Blocked off sinkhole

A roving UHub photographer forwarded a photo of the Ronan Park sinkhole today after city crews tried to wrap it off to keep anybody from trying to see just how far down - and where - it goes.

Be on the lookout for giant rodents.

I don't believe they exist.

They would need 2 detail officers to guard the hole. :)

Did you know "details" is a rather vague term... they (cops) receive no training on what they're supposed to do... or how to stay safe when working a "detail". OSHA violation when they're in the worksite without training, hardhat, high-vis vest & on their phones chatting....

A perk the police should no longer have.

Park was built on an old burial ground, to save money they only moved the headstones. Say, has anyone seen Carol Ann lately?

Oh, now that looks secure. Whoever engineered that, should be publicly named so they can receive the credit they're due.

There's a right way, a wrong way and the Department of Public Works way . . .

How long till a Masshole falls in?

A masshole in a mass hole would be something to see!

Ronan Park was an 11 acre estate owned by an old Dorchester family.

The city in its munificence bought this in the 1880's to keep it as open space, but also, Mayor Collins lived nearby and may have not wanted development near him (The More Things Change The More They Stay The Same, Right Newton?).

The park is named for Fr. Ronan who started St. Peter's up the street.

It could be the old Capen estate well.

"Officials block off..."

That's always the way. They start taking things away from the city & disadvantaged/minority neighborhoods.

First the streetcar lines.
Then walkable neighborhood schools.
Then our Nike missle silos.
...don't forget the #18 bus might be next!

Yeah, why can't poor neighborhoods have horribly dangerous holes in city parks like everywhere else?

New dog park location?

Seriously? Why couldn't they start filling it instead? Or are they still scratching their heads. Parents watch your kids and dogs. Both always seem to find a way to get into things even though the child and pet doorway gates are "installed" .

Start filling it with what? It's not a small divot on the golf course, it's seemingly a sinkhole. You don't just throw some dirt into the hole and call it a day.

Keep going and explain the procedure.

Just slap some cold patch on that sucker.

Obviously, we're filling it with the mountain of stolen Trump ballots from Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Puerto Rico. Hasn't anyone been watching the news? You've gotta do something with them, and who'd think to look in Massachusetts?

Why change the Department of Public Works approach to maintenance now?

If it's a former well, there may well be a spring down there that "ate" the previous fill.

There may be an underground river or a water main leaking into the area, and OH, COOL, subsidence.

Once you know what's causing the sinkhole, then you can remediate.

Really, really don't want someone shoveling dirt into it and having it subside again in a couple of months.

Sink holes happen because ... water!

If it is an abandoned well, those also end in ... water!

They need to know what is causing the hole and what is underneath in order to make any fill solution permanent.

... has to be released from somewheres.
