Lowkey marijuana shop in Codman Square approved with no fuss

Lowkey Dispensary | Dorchester | Boston

The Zoning Board of Appeal yesterday approved plans for a marijuana shop at 571B Washington St., next to the Citizens Bank, in Codman Square.

Lowkey Dispensary will take the place of the now closed XO Restaurant, with roughly 1,700 square feet of store space.

The Boston Cannabis Board approved the proposal in September; it still needs a final OK from the state Cannabis Control Commission.

Good!

Is this a black owned business?

Or both.

It was an "equity" application, which means the owner is either a member of a minority group that had been disproportionately affected by past drug laws or somebody who was convicted for a marijuana-related offense in the past that is no longer illegal. Apologies, but I don't know which.

You can't trust that guy.

Cheaper on the street

Agreed, but there will always be people who want to do this the legal way; the "color inside the lines" set. The lines around the corner at NETA Brookline seem to indicate that there's healthy enough demand to sustain this model.

Now, if Dems get control of the senate and get cannabis legalized nationally, that's when things are going to get interesting, though likely really crappy for the people unattached to big ag, big tobacco, or pharma.

I really would love to know where you're getting pot for less than 40 bucks an 8th cuz thats about what I pay for discounts (Yeah I'm a medi person).

I'd also love to know the quality. Does it come with a test result? No you say, you could be buying oregano then. Most of what I have seen on the street for pot is crap compared to what you can get in a store. Its sub par out of state rejects, or is sold as "its this strain" when you have idea if its true or not. Or fact of the matter, what is wrong with it and why was it rejected, where it came from, how it was grow, what pesticides were used.

When you buy on the street, you're don't know what you're getting. It could be oregano or could be some killer shit. It could change every time you buy it. You would never know until you got home and smoked.

"but I trust my buddy". Do you? I'm sure all the people who got bought some heroin but got slipped some worse. But hey "they trusted their dealer". Sure pot vs heroin big difference, but same rules apply. You dont know what you're getting, and many times, neither does your buddy.

The only way to know is to buy it in a store that has been tested by a state lab. Not your buddy on the corner.

And finally, when you buy from a store like this, you're supporting a small business. When you buy some from your buddy, you're supporting a criminal enterprise. You OK with supporting groups that could also fund gang violence, child abduction, rape, and more? You OK with buying it from your buddy who supports that racket just to save a few bucks because "the state stores are too expensive"

Or would you just rather support a small minority owned business?

Many many eights out there for 25-35 dollars. Super duper common. Even at dispensaries in Maryland those are prices.

Buds Provisions in Worcester has $30 1/8ths. Bloom Brothers in Pittsfield has $38 eights.

I don’t pay more than $40 an 1/8th on the street. That’s nuts. You’re a dream custy.

it is criminal to charge the amount of taxes they do on cannabis. today's street cannabis is just as good and at a price of $200 per ounce it is a bargain and we are talking sticky and the variety is the same, where do you think 50% of what is grown legally goes???

look at what is happening in colorado, everyone is a weed dealer, you dont need that legal buy in

There are plenty of people who want the weed shop experience so don't sweat it. the question you should be asking is who else in the Walsh administration is part of Boston Trust Realty Group...do some digging....LOL

Then you know where it came from, and get a reasonable price.

Your argument about crime is false. Street weed is low quality and inexpensive. It isn't driving dangerous crime. As planned, high quality weed legally available is an easier choice for more people.

A lot of "weed guys" only grow/sell pot, and nothing they're doing is tied into crime. A lot of folks get theirs from someone for whom it's a side business (and it's pretty amazing who's doing this; I've known people whose weed guys are professors, doctors, lawyers, etc.) There are also more disenfranchised folks I've known who are doing it to make a living and are not otherwise involved with anything illegal. These are good people to support.

However, many people selling cannabis are also selling other things and living the drug dealer life; just look at how many of the drug bust photos include a commercial amount of cannabis along with the spread of hard drugs, guns, cash, aggressive dogs. I'm in favor of doing a Portugal and decriminalizing everything, but since we haven't done that, I would say it's a bad idea to hang out with people involved with dealing hard drugs.

I guess it's more a matter of "know your weed guy?" If you're fairly certain the person is growing it personally and otherwise lives a law-abiding life, then you're probably not in danger of getting stabbed in an alley when you meet up with them, and you're probably not supporting violent crime.

You're on the spot, just look at vape carts and you can see why the libertarian "no regulations" attitude is a poor solution.

I've heard people brag about how much less expensive they get them from "their guy" and how they're totally legit because they are all boxed up and packaged so you can see it's the same stuff you buy legally in California.

Those brothers in the midwest who were busted generating a ton of those counterfeits were buying bottom of the barrel empty cartridges from China which, when tested, burn off heavy metals and they were stepping like hell on the oil with Vitamin E acetate (so you're not even getting near the amount of THC you would in a legal one) which is linked to those severe lung illnesses. If you move upstream from there I knew some guys who had an illegal commercial hydro setup back in the day and to avoid losing the whole thing to mites or mold they had a very heavy hand with the insecticides and anti-fungals because those were pennies relative to the risk of losing their whole setup.

I'll stick with the legal market, thanks.

The Adams Village location has onsite parking, and nearby bus stop. Codman Sq is great but there isn't much parking.

So why is the weed store approved for Codman Square, where there isn't parking, and rejected for Adams village where there is?

BTW, different weed stores.

And rejected a cannabis store in the community. Simple enough. Enough folks thought that the addition of a cannabis store would impact the neighborhood negatively. High five to the Adams Ashmont neighborhood!

The people from Cedar Grove came out in droves against the proposal, they even had an online petition. The people from Codman Square did not.

Predominantly-white neighborhood said no weed store.

Predominantly black-neighborhood said yes weed store.

There was a proposal for Uphams Corner a while back where the business model was focused on the newer regulations which will allow delivery. If this place takes advantage of that then the folks in Adams Corner can go to Codman Square once to register and then just have it brought to their door.
