Are the turkeys mutating? What is this bird?

Unusual bird in Somerville

Tim Devin spotted this bird on Spring Hill in Somerville today, has a question:

OK, Internet, what the hell is this?

Although in the interests of pedantry, that would make it a peahen.

But if that's what it is, the next obvious question is: OK, what the hell is a peahen doing in Somerville?

I lived next to one of those people. I didn't enjoy it, and you wouldn't either. Loud (REALLY loud) screaming during mating season. This one probably escaped.

You should have heard this woman my roommate brought home one time.

Unless you've had the peacock experience, you wouldn't understand that no human being can be that loud.

Film at 11.

Maybe it is an emotional support peahen?!

I've seen the peacocks allowed to roam the Franklin Park Zoo before. And one of the peacocks even made it out as recently as May this year. Could be another bird that flew the coop currently.

Please, let's use the gender correct terms here. It is PEAFOWL.

I used to work at the Stone Zoo. They would escape occasionally. This one could have worked its way down the Fellsway. You could call your Animal Control Officer. You could also contact the Animal Rescue League of Boston. Good luck.

Could be a peacock turkey hybrid.

That's what it is.

Or a white female peacock.

I think it's a peahen aka female peacock

(A guess, TBH). Somebody probably knows who this specific bird is . .

A bald eagle had the sex with a turkey.

The Birding in Massachusetts FB group seems to think it is a peahen. How did it wind up in Somerville though?

My husband told me he thought he saw this bird in Brookline a few months ago. I thought he was crazy, but maybe he was right after all...

The Brookline one could of easily made it from the Franklin Park Zoo. Just follow the Jamaica Way. You could call them if it is still around. You could also call the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

That clearly is a sick bird. No sign of turkey. More like peacock. Poor thing. Bring it to Tufts.

I learn from Wikipedia that there are actually three species; one from Africa, that, though interesting, is not really what we think of as a peacock; the familiar Indian Peafowl; and the Green Peafowl of southeast Asia, which I hereby declare, on the basis of the wiki-pictures, to be the most beautiful of all. Really, check out the pictures. They are all stunning, and the one of two peacocks fighting is like something out of a fevered dream.

It’s a yearling Black-Winged peafowl. Cannot identity it’s sex from this photo. It’s got to be hungry and burning up energy staying warm. A predator likely got after it and it flew so far its lost. Please somebody throw it some dried pet food. Dog kibble is perfect.
They are very helpful at hunting ticks and mice on farms. Not all peafowl are noisy. It depends on the species. Even the one loud species is only noisy for a few weeks out of the year and largely silent otherwise.

They require total protein (animal) consistently, especially at this developmental stage. Somebody needs to throw it some nutritious food and walk it into a garage or some other enclosed space that I cannot fly out of.
Once that happens its owner can retrieve it. They may pay a reward as that is an extremely valuable peafowl and it’s heartbreaking to lose one.

Write on lost pets on Facebook- someone is searching for this bird and they need to remain with their parents for three years. This bird will not make it through another week without food.

If no one claims it I will take it home and add it to my flock of peafowl.
