The boxer and the Bostonian

Sugar Ray Leonard in 1984

The folks at the Boston City Archives have posted this photo of Sugar Ray Leonard at an event in Boston in 1984 and wonder if anybody can identify the guy he's with (they're really asking this time; they don't know).

The event could have been during one of Leonard's three trips to Boston that year.

Two were to have his eye checked out at Mass. General; the first which led to a postponement of his fight with some no-name at the Worcester Centrum because of a retina issue, the second to see if his eye had healed enough to allow a fight (it had).

On the other trip, he visited the State House - where former boxer and then state Rep. Joe DeNucci of Newton had filed a bill to limit the amount of taxes the state would take from the Worcester fight. As he was introduced, during a budget debate, state reps broke into a chant of "Marvin! Marvin!" for Marvelous Marvin Hagler of Brockton, whom Leonard seemed destined to face - which he did, in Las Vegas in 1987.

The State House visit was on April 11, so that would fit in with the Marathon shirts or bibs the guy is holding.

I would guess that the gentleman on the right in the photo is from the BAA. Note the unicorn tie tack.

Because he looks so athletic?

When aging former athletes stopped training, ran the events for active athletes, and lived large!

You know its ok to occasionally let a larger person walk by without making a fat joke right?

Q: Who is bigger? Mrs. Bigger or Mrs. Bigger's baby?

A: Mrs. Bigger's baby, because he's a little bigger!

A young Brian Wallace.

I swear, I met the guy 15 years after that photo, and he looked like 30 years older. Still, decent enough of a guy.

That is also a Galway tie on him which means my grandmother probably gave it to him in 1981.

Van Morrison maybe?
