Who can help tell us where the annoying reverberating nightly noise is coming from, affecting Hyde Park & Milton?

Since January of 2020, most nights beginning at 10.00 pm or later, there is a constant reverberating noise.

Last night it began at 10.00 pm and stopped at 8.00 am.

The worst was the night before Thanksgiving.

People, say it is trains, no it sounds like a factory of some sort.

How do we identify where it is coming from and stop it?

Bart owns the factory at 35 Industry Way. Maybe that’s it.

I'm near Logan Square and completely agree both on your observations and frustration. Its not the trains at all, my bet is a large scale metal lathe or something. None the less it must stop, Revolt the Reverb!!!!!!!!!!

I looked at the weather situation. In both cases there would have been a lot of water to deal with - 1.2 inches of rain on November 24, melting snow with heavy rain forecast this week.

Could be related to a flood control system on the Neponset River. https://www.neponset.org/archived-pages/flood-prevention/

Where is there a pumping station in that area?

Both have very limited storage capacity. Either might have pumps or other systems for moving water downstream. I'm trying to find out more information.

From the description of when the noise is most intense coinciding with times when it would be necessary to move water down the river, and the location (HP/Milton) it may be related to riverworks.

It might also be a system to keep areas clear of water, such as a large development with an underground parking garage. These are becoming more common as heavy precipitation events have escallated.

This is the Hollingsworth and Tileston Dam, easily visible from the parking lot of the new Dollar Tree at 912 River St:

We shall assume you didn't mean to post all 253 photos in this file. Yes I looked at all of them.

I’m pretty positive the dam is it. Nothing else in place to move the water in Lower Mills. I thought it was determined months ago that the noise is the bass from a nearby DJ.

Is the dam on a schedule?

No, but looked like raging rapids today from all the rain.

SwirlyGirlthank you so much! You are probably correct as we live close to Price right and were questioning if it was the damn near the old paper mill. We will definitely investigate.

Everyone else, it is not the Readville train yard and Susi asphalt does not run at night, we already contacted them.

The asphalt plant should be shutting down for the season soon too, if they haven't already. So if you first noticed this phenomenon back in January, it couldn't be asphalt production since it doesn't happen around here in winter.

Roughly, where do you live? Which street?

Swirly has a good theory. I was pondering the Susi asphalt plant on Hyde Park Ave. There’s also the train storage in the Readville Yard.

Hope that helps. Interesting theory about water pumps. I would guess it's something to do with the Readville train yard.

Has anyone tried to follow the noise to it's source?

I wonder if the shot-spotters pick it up?

I'm on Williams and I can hear it. Not every night but enough for me to start keeping a fan on at night because its slowly driving me insane!

We have lived off of lower Metropolitan in Roslindale for over 15 years and this is the first year that we have heard and been frustrated by this incessant noise also. The noise happens regardless of the weather and wakes me up in the middle of the night frequently, even during the dryness of the summer when I had my air conditioning cranking.

Last week, we saw what looked like Sunbelt generators along a stretch of the track parallel to Sherrin woods but don’t know who is using them, when or why.

ETA: Amtrak has also equipment all along the tracks but we don’t know for certain if it’s them. I planned to call the ONS next week to see if they knew or could find out what the project is causing this noise.

Exactly, as it started in January 2020 and occurs whether or not it is raining. Usually, it does not occur during the weekend.

We also see heavy equipment on the Readville tracks and more down to the former Westinghouse building, which is now condos. We will have to drive over one night when the noise starts to investigate. I cannot believe this noise doesn’t bother others. It keeps our children up too.

They have a facility on the other side of the tracks. I run by it several nights a week, but never after 10. They've been there for at least 10 years.

I took a walk along Providence St last week to see what I could see. Sunbelt is a rental facility and not the source of the noise.

I saw a couple of small Amtrak trailers, wheels of cable and some port-o-potties but nothing that looked to be the cause of the humming.
