Car flies off I-93 at the Zakim, lands on Leverett ramp, driver survives

State Police report that sometime before 6:20 p.m., a driver flew off I-93 southbound at the Leverett ramp, landing on the ramp rather than continuing to plunge down to the ground or water. The driver was taken to the hospital "conscious and alert," State Police say. NECN reports the driver, a 19-year-old from Lynn, was standing next to his car when troopers arrived.

Drove by this tonight getting on 93 at City Square. Bizarre. Can’t believe driver survived.

Zoinks!
Hi Adam, typo in headline. Also, did the driver fly off the ramp or did his car? Check your subject.
Dramatic either way!

Cars are tough these days and keep users safe.
What is this going to do to the High School Drivers Education Industry?

Cars are tough these days and keep users safe.

You got that right.

That kid was incredibly lucky to survive that. He was in a very small Toyota.

Doubly lucky that no one was underneath at that moment.

NBCBoston's traffic cam caught it.

This is Dukes of Hazard type of stuff. Hope driver is OK, but also hope there is video.

Or do the ramps around the Zakim all feel like they are still just temporary structures while the bridge and the Big Dig are completed. I wish they would just surface all the roads there. I have a degree of fear of heights and elevated highway ramps are a big trigger.

It's not just you. I always slow down to 60 but still get dizzy on those ramps.

being tailgated by an over-loaded trailer truck from Maine, is my favorite driving experience. Well, maybe a crazy Quebecois jacked up on crank, carrying a load of OSB, could be better. It's a tossup. In either case it's always reassuring to know that our roads were constructed by impeccably honest contractors, and now they are maintained by MassDOT, and vigilantly patrolled by MSP.

And are you not making a passing move?

You might be asking for the tailgating.

If someone in front of you is moving slowly, they are not "asking for tailgaiting".

That's ridiculous. Have you ever been taught to pass safely? Tailgaiging is a dumb idea - you fade back to pass so you can get better sight lines.

Besides, the person driving the vehicle in front of you IS NOT DRIVING YOUR CAR. You are driving your car. You are responsible for NOT tailgaiting. You are not entilted to harass others because you think that they drive too slow.

Ditto for when that person is simply not speeding.

By boxing me in.

If I’ve resorted to tailgating, it’s because I’ve run out of patience. There’s no good reason not to move out of my way. If you want to coast to get behind a car to the right, fine, just (expletive) get it done.

A couple of things:
a. "run out of patience", well, then. Maybe you shouldn't drive in the city or on busy highways.
b. "There's no good reason not to move out of my way." Really? Maybe they don't want to deal with all the off and on-ramp traffic and are doing their thru-traffic thing by staying in that lane. There is nothing stopping you from moving over and passing on the right.
c. "And they’re not entitled to harass me." Well, there's your problem right there: it's not about you and you need to stop being so GD selfish. Did you ever think they're just driving and not thinking about your feelings?

Suggesting that he move over and pass on the right, a blatantly dangerous and illegal maneuver, shows how little you know about driving and the law. How about you follow the law and only get in the left lane WHEN PASSING otherwise STAY OFF

What part of "I'm being boxed in" eluded you?

"And they’re not entitled to harass me." Well, there's your problem right there: it's not about you and you need to stop being so GD selfish.

That was a response to Swirly telling me that I'm not entitled to harass people. That goes both ways.

Did you ever think they're just driving and not thinking about your feelings?

Maybe they need to stop being so GD selfish.

If you're going over the speed limit, then your argument is moot.

It's not my job to get out of your way so you can break the law.

Is that, if you're in front of me, I can prove that you were failing to make a passing move while to the left of another vehicle without incriminating myself.

You can't prove that I was speeding without yourself admitting to speeding.

So you're confessing, in writing, to 'slowing down' to 60pmh on ramps that are signed for 25 mph? :)

I have the tamely rebranded WRX drivetrain my subie and I still won't take that ramp at that kind of speed.

How the hell did the car go clean over the Jersey Barrier?

Enough speed, mass, momentum ... objects travelling a line like to stay in that line.

up

yes, except that car appears to have been in a spot where it would have been going straight or slightly curved to the right (if it was coming in from the ramp from the Tobin Bridge). Momentum wouldn't create a sharper turn to the right. Hitting something and/or a sharp swerve must have been involved.

High speed pass on the left and sharp cut to the lane for Storrow?

up

Abrupt lane change would certainly seem possible to me.
-
Not for Storrow, though. If I'm looking at the video correctly (watching the only vertical-moving headlight blob), they were already past the Storrow exit and the onramp from the Tobin, and were approaching the Zakim itself. They didn't fall on the Leverett ramp - they fell to one of the ramps to/from Tobin.

...what did he intend to do?

I am curious.

Anything is possible for Boston drivers. Except driving safely while following the laws of the road.

Terminate this drivers license.

We don't know if another driver did something stupid or dangerous to cause the launch, though.

Investigate and then terminate.

It's pretty disgusting how so many people don't care if they endanger other people, as well as themselves.

There are people who do drive safely in Boston, in fact, there are people who have never had an accident or gotten a ticket. I know, I'm one of them.

But I still want the dangerous jackoffs off of the roadways, and much stricter penalties for mayhem/killing people.

I'm sick of subsidizing their insurance, and being at risk of their hazardous operation of motorized killing machines.

Driving is a privilege. Some need that privilege to be revoked.

motorized killing machines

Yikes. Glad we don’t let you make the laws

They may become airborne, but cars don't fly.
