State drops flu-shot requirement for students

WBZ reports the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has dropped a requirement that students need to get a flu shot, partly because there has been so little flu this season, partly because it needs to concentrate on getting people vaccinated against Covid-19 rather than on checking flu-shot compliance.

because they're not in school. And have no immediate plans to be in school (at least for high schoolers). And at this time, there's no point in sending them to school when they do go back because the students are just going to be sitting in homeroom on their laptops the entire time - which they can just do at home without the commuting time.
I truly think those in charge at BPS are trying to get kids to leave the city and schools.

They’re probably running out.

Just did a quick check from my preferred vendor on delivery times for common needles and syringes and I'm not seeing any usual lead times, most are in stock. Unlike PPE like the nitrile gloves I normally order, had reordered in July and still have not received.

Same! Just ordered some needles and syringes and nothing I looked at was back ordered. I would guess it’s more about the availability of people and locations to give the vaccines.

It's better to direct the efforts, for now, of those with the appropriate skills to administer Covid vaccinations rather than flu vaccinations.

We have a very high number of people vaccinated for the flu right now, which is a very good thing. When the vaccine was mandated for kids, it raised awarness and parents got their vaccinations alongside their children Elders ran the stocks of their vaccine low, too.

Combined with people hiding from COVID-19, the risk of co-epidemic is now low enough to permit the shift.

The kids are still learning at home but better safe than sorry.

It's agreed--better to be safe than sorry.

I've noticed fewer colds as well. I wonder if masks and sanitizer on hands played a part in prevention.

I do have to say the flu has been very minimal this year.

I hope that one of the good things about the pandemic is how handwashing & masks around cold & flu season can really make a difference.

I got my shot anyways.. It was free @ CVS with my insurance. I picked up a script, got some food items, Tylenol, my photo order, stamps, and a flu shot all in one trip.

...those habits (handwashing, getting immunized, consciousness about being around others while being sick) will stick after the pandemic is over.

I'm all for flu vaccines, and get one every year, but the state was not going to be able to enforce this "requirement" anyways. Why pass public health requirements when you know you can't/won't enforce them? The BPS doesn't even enforce requirements for the routine childhood vaccinations- ie non-compliant kids are not excluded from attending school, even if they have no medical or religious exemptions.

Plus, the staff was not going to be held to the same standard. What's the point of that?

If it does, that's a dangerous, dangerous mistake, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. I certainly hope not. Frankly, I think that students, regardless of age, should be required to get a flu shot every year! It's beyond foolhardy not to!

UMass does require flu and meningitis vaccines when there is an issue with those.

My son had to have his to return to campus after winter break one year.

My 4 kids (17, 8, 6, 3) have not been sick since the Pandemic started. I have 2 bottles of Tylenol that I haven't used since March 2020. I'm glad they do not have to get the flu shot. It didn't make sense if most of the kids are in remote learning. I wasn't going to allow it either way.
