Third city councilor to run for mayor

The Dorchester Reporter gets the scoop: At-large Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George will announce tomorrow she's running for mayor.

She will join fellow councilors Michelle Wu (at large) and Andrea Campbell (Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale) in a formal bid for the seat Marty Walsh hopes to give up to become US labor secretary.

I like her, she’s got my vote.

Are you a cop or a developer?

I kid, what's good about AEG for you?

She’s actually from Boston, Boston her whole life. Wife, mother, small business owner. Boston School teacher. I think she’ll be good for the city

Ok Scott Brown, forgive those who weren’t lucky enough to be be born in a particular zip code and had the privilege to stay. Her husband basically owns half the god damn city, I’m all set giving a developer even more power.

She's 'aware of housing issues' (that her husband exacerbates).

Andrea Campbell is also from Boston, public school graduate, accomplished attorney, smart as a whip, a mother to two young children. She’d be an excellent mayor who understands this city well.

Michelle Wu would just be a virtual signaler as mayor. Either Campbell or Essaibi-George are much better options than Wu.

They are overqualified for the job, Ivy League educated lawyers.

I’d rather have someone with experience being a parent of BPS kids, teaching in BPS, growing up in Boston, being aware of housing issues.

The other two are using the Mayor position as a stepping stone. Your welcome to support that if you want.

Oh yeah, we should definitely pick someone with Boston roots who definitely wouldn't use the mayoral position as a stepping stone for another role. Someone like that Marty Walsh guy from Dorchester - he was born here and spent his life here and didn't get one of those highfalutin' Ivy League educations, surely if elected mayor he wouldn't use it as a stepping stone for another role right?

Also - I don't know about Campbell, but Wu has kids in the BPS system. Turns out you don't need to have been born here to have that experience!

This is one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever read in UHub.

Over qualified to be the mayor of one of the most important dynamic cities in the world?

You keep saying she’s from Boston, like Andrea Campbell isn’t from Boston??

you can't hear the dog whistle?

One is (involuntarily) where she was born and grew up, two describe billions of people, and two are professions. Maybe consider the issues before you vote?

Is that a shot at Campbell or something? She's from Boston, went to BLS, wife, mother (I think?), etc... Not saying you should like Campbell over E-G but only the last two things are a differentiator.

who was born in Chicago.

But it's a dumb point - Wu didn't have any control over where she was born and raised, and she's spent her entire adult life in the Boston area and working for the city.

I do think the knock that someone didn't live here their whole life is funny given how fraught with ugliness like busing, etc... the recent history of the city is. Being able to know that someone wasn't maybe raised by a Dapper Oneal voter is a big plus for an 'import' candidate.

America * - 'we're a melting pot!'
Boston politics - 'which parish did your grandma belong to?'

* the America I was taught about in school, not the actual one we live in.

Wu moved back to Chicago to take of her family. Her roots are in Chicago. The right choice, but your statement is false.

up

Oh sorry yeah she moved back to Chicago for 2 years to take care of her family. So sure, she only spent 15 out of 17 years of her adult life in the Boston area. You got me. Sorry for that enormous inaccuracy - I guess we'll have to agree that ever leaving the 128 belt is a great reason why you can never be mayor.

That you’re not really sorry.

but years of going to city council meetings and similar civic gatherings have made me grow pretty tired of the "if you weren't born here your opinion isn't as important" idea. Turns out even people from other places still have connections and experiences in the city once they move here - we're all still dealing with housing issues, the school system, finding jobs, transportation, etc.

How about discussing the actual policy and ideas of these people rather than just focusing on who does or doesn't meet your arbitrary criteria of "having roots"?

And a former teacher. As a BPS parent, education is one of my biggest concerns. She has pushed for kids to return to in person learning because it is supported by science and pediatricians.

Unlike the other At-Large Councilors,
Annissa Essaibi George has been attentive to our issues and neighborhood needs in the Fenway.

She's accessible and takes action on constituents' behalf.

Only remember seeing the other At-Large Councilors once at a voter forum before the last primary.

Annissa Essaibi-George, voted to pass City Budget,
Campbell a dreary Marxist, and Wu a Harvard Grad who stuck around did not.

With and Campbell's childlike fantasies about social service delivery instead of law enforcement speak volumes about their non existent connection to and the lack of regard they have for quality of life for their Constituents.

Annissa has had real jobs, a business, grew up in lived in Boston her who!e life. She strikes a good balance of nuts and bolts civic duty and liberal idealism.

to not let MW become a mayor?

I'm not sure that setup works for anyone to play spoiler like that, unless they really expect to split or dilute the vote for one candidate and not anyone else's.

up

Since Boston has non-partisan municipal elections, the preliminary election is just all the candidates mixed together and then the general election is the top two from that race. So it's not the same as a single election, but the dynamics are similar, you still have coalesce your votes around a candidate to get to first two places, and without any sort of party system there's no guarantee that "your side" will get through even if your side is large.

To pick a concrete example with made up numbers, if you had a city that was 60% Democratic and 40% Republican but there were six Democratic candidates and two Republican candidates and voters split their vote evenly among the candidates from their respective party, then two Republicans would advance to the next round with 20% each while the Democrats each got 10% each. That's a simple example which doesn't really describe how Boston politics works, which isn't really along red-blue lines, but that's the basic dynamics.

From what I've seen of the candidates so far, I don't see anything showing that additional candidates are likely to be siphoning votes from Michelle Wu specifically. Unless these new candidates are pulling from her base but not anyone else's base, I don't think it makes sense as the OP implied to add additional candidates as a means to make things tricky for her.

That they think they could do a good job and could possibly win.

Everyone on the council wants to become mayor. It's the same job with more power.

Annissa has been an excellent city councilor and very on point on a number of issues especially education and homelessness. She's not my preferred candidate but I'd be very comfortable with her as mayor if she wins.

A pro-developer, white woman posing as a POC (Tunisians are white according to the US Census Bureau, and she's mixed with more white) who is no doubt a typical, neoliberal, (aspiring) corporate democrat who is Marty Walsh's favorite shill. Ew.

What's worse is her being a "woman (of color)" will make lessen any criticism of her continuing Marty Walsh's legacy. She'd get labeled as "progressive" because she is a woman and mother of BPS kids. I can see the BS from a mile away.

She is the silent but deadly type and her mayoralty would be disastrous for Black/Latino Boston. This is a woman who voted to approve the police budget without major redirection of funds. Unlike, the other two candidates.

up
Voting closed 0

wouldn't that make her African-American since Tunisia is in Africa?

up
Voting closed 0

How about some standards POC is not a race or ethnic group.

up
Voting closed 0

Well, you OTH sound like a true progressive ("not a real WOC")

up

It's comical to think that the City Council was in any real position to redirect major City funding less than a month before the budget was due, during a worldwide pandemic, and at risk of laying off a number of city employees. That is absolute fanciful thinking by the mostly Twitter activist crowd. Someone like Lydia Edwards, a very serious progressive, understood that to her credit.

As for attacking Annissa for being a "fake POC," good luck with that one. And if you think she's "pro-developer," then you clearly don't pay attention to what is going on as she is one of the more NIMBY councilors in reality when it comes to opposing projects. I don't say that as a compliment to her but better to be factual about things than toss ill-informed ad hominems.
