Walsh puts brand-new police commissioner on leave after domestic-violence allegation surfaces

White

The Globe reports Mayor Walsh put Police Commissioner Dennis White - who took office on Monday - on leave after its reporters began asking about domestic-violence allegations against White dating to 1999.

Walsh appointed White last week to replace William Gross, who retired Friday with just one day's public notice.

Is there a link for us who can't afford a subscription to the Globe? When I click the link on my phone to read the Globe article it won't let me read it until pay to read it.

Shouldn't they just appoint an acting commissioner & let the new mayor (voted mayor, not acting), appoint their choice of commissioner?

The interim time could be used to have a search committee do a real search to line up and vet potential candidates rather than just grabbing the next person in line right away.

Apparently the city outsources background checks to the Globe for major political appointees. Walsh should be ashamed of himself.

Meanwhile, BPD loses even more of the public's trust as yet another scandal is discovered. The next commissioner should be someone from outside policing, who can actually clean up this department. Maybe an executive from a Boston-area corporation?

It is more likely that they did do a background check but a restraining order alone is a civil process and does not by itself cause a red flag unless the restraining order was violated and became a criminal matter.

Restraining orders are listed on a CORI background check, so this should have been caught.

5-10 cops dropped the dime on this guy. Surprised they didn’t give it to Turtleboy first.

I'm sure it's just a coincedence though.

My gut says Marty doesn't last long in DC.

allegations against White dating to 1999

News? Didn't surface during the vetting process? Oh that's right, there wasn't one, just Marty's gut feeling. He has a sense when it comes to picking people.

But a lot of them aren't saints. In the last week we have learned the members of the state police and Boston Police abuse and beat their wives and girlfriends. The Transit Police beat up elderly people of color. Several cops have been charged with stealing thousands of dollars in detail pay. My back the blue sign is going out with the trash next week.

People probably told you to take that sign down a long time ago.

a bold new anti-racism strategy by BPD. “I’m not racist, my wife’s eye is black.”

This isn’t a race issue. He is of mixed race. This is a domestic violence issue.

Admittedly, it really wasn't funny. It was cringey.

Yeah I guess some of us don't think men beating women jokes are funny.

Here's a bit from Adam's story when Gross jumped ship last week:

"Mayor Walsh announced Gross will be replaced by Dennis White, currently BPD superintendent and Gross's chief of staff. He would be the department's second Black commissioner."

So maybe my tv needs adjustment but I think that's a mistake. I am easily confused though. Simple reporting error? Someone please tell me what a horrible person I am for pointing this out.

A fine example of Marty's judgement. Can't wait for this to be addressed during his confirmation hearing.

Police officers automatically dismissed when they have a restraining order imposed against them. That's already the policy at most private companies.

ProTip: If your spouse wants you gone, leave.

Because everyone is entitled to a hearing for the extension of that order.

If it gets extended sure I’m with you.

I would like to know what companies dismiss an employee when a civil restraining order is issued.
