Adult hired by BPS to work with student leaders tried to get them to cry

The Globe reports a consultant hired by BPS to work with the Boston Student Advisory Council used re-evaluation counseling, in which meetings would turn from dealing with strictly school-related issues to getting the teens to reveal personal information and cry.

..what else like this is going on that we don't hear about.

By the way, in case you didn't look, Wikipedia has this to say about Harvey Jackins, originator of so-called "re-evaluation counseling". I can't believe this was allowed to go on with students expecting to deal with school related issues:

In the early 1950s, Harvey Jackins, a labor organizer and political activist, became acquainted with L. Ron Hubbard's theory of Dianetics, in 1952 forming Personal Counselors Inc., which stated its objective as to "engage in, conduct and teach the art and science of Dianetics." In 1957, Hubbard's Scientology organisation claimed that Jackins was describing himself as a "Dianetics Auditor". While practicing Dianetics, he developed the concepts of "re-evaluation" and "discharge", and came to believe that they could be encouraged by the "exchange of aware attention" in the "co-counseling process".

As a prospective BPS parent who has followed the system for three years now, I must say there is substantial waste and too many voodoo ideas passed off as innovation and fostering equity.

Such a sadly broken, politicized public school system. I fearfully await the upcoming mayoral campaigns, as nothing changes.

Nothing will change. It’s been like this for decades, until parents tip the scales from the teachers union/school board, this cycle with continue.

When is the BPS Superintendant going to be held accountable for this dysfunction.

Using cultish, unproven tactics on unwilling minors? Holy shirtballs, that's a set up for a lifetime fear of authority figures and distrust of mental health.

One of the biggest mindset issues that continue to cause inequity in schools is the expectation of teachers and administrators that they are there to 'save' children from their culture and family situations. It leads to distrust and fights between schools and families, and it causes White savior complexes that help NOBODY.

Is really any more dangerous than Zoloft, clonidine, risperdal, lithium, adderall, zyprexa, and all the other stuff forced on unwilling minors to help them "get right".

Depends on who is leading group talk therapy and whether they are using verified means of doing so.

Also depends on the biology involved - you seem be alluding to some distant invalid notion hat there is no biological basis of some of these disorders that can be treated with drugs.

Ever try to talk down a fully manic individual? Or someone who has become intensely psychotic from schizophrenia? Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are biologically-based and have to be managed with pharmaceuticals before there is any talking of any kind.

FYI, lithium only works if you are bipolar.

But the BPS is an embarrassment.
We have 2 kids in them and we wish we could get them out of there.
If we had the money the BPS spends per student they could be getting a top notch education elsewhere, instead of the mediocre one they are receiving.

Eeekk! Thanks for including the wikipedia link for "re-evaluation counseling" Adam.
Finding out that it was developed by someone copying L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics/Scientology theory is horrifying. And the wiki section on Criticisms of this style of peer counseling is eye opening that it has been solicited, allowed, and promoted within BPS.

Just kidding. It can't. Especially for the leaders of the future. Nobody should be afraid of ideas, feelings, or discussion. Prove me wrong!

Scientology claims to be, and enjoys the privileges of a religion. Religion has no place in public schools. This clown should be given the boot, right now.

You realize brainwashing and emotional abuse are things that exist in reality and gravely harm people, right?

(And FWIW, as a clinician who is often hired by defense teams, I am absolutely not on board with the trendy "anything-short-of-enlightenment-is-abuse" sentiment. But people can absolutely be very severely harmed by "just talking," particularly when it comes from professionals or others with power over someone.)

Darn you Boston Globe paywall. If only this was a type of wall where Magoo could build a trebuchet. Magoo would then put Magoo’s self in the basket and release the trigger mechanism thereby firing Magoo over the paywall. Magoo would then have free reign to read all the stores on the Boston Globe.com. Magoo.

Seriously, was this a voluntary therapy-type thing that parents signed permission slips for?

Should questionable-at-best and most-likely-harmful pseudoscientific practices be allowed in public schools at all?

I think we can lay that at the feet of both conservatives wanting everything privatized and neoliberals hell bent on having as few actual public employees as possible.

This rot infects private schools, too, where assemblies are called and people are paid to vend chewing gum promise ring misogyny excusing boys from controlling themselves. In the public sector, it leads to other lovely bullshit like the situation we have here.

Meanwhile, there is a dearth of counselors to handle routine matters, even though a full staff could also handle these issues and put on educational assemblies and the like.

How is it that in a metro region with so much human capital -- where adults have greater educational attainment than almost any other place in the country -- that we cannot figure out how to educate our children at the basic levels?

This city and its politics are truly a sight to behold -- an experiment in everything ineffective.

BPS fiefdom, then any public servant in decades. Take a look at this groups twitter page. It reads like a Bernie Sanders campaign ad. These people were insulated by holding up kids like these as human political shields. To what end? Disgusting.

And now we may know why a number of BPS students walked off their school committee association in protest of how they were being treated? Could this have been a contributing factor?

I'm withholding judgement, but so far I haven't heard anything that's as horrible as this is being made out to be. Kids go to a session, with their parents permission, and have a "heavy rap session" (quotes are mine.) And?

It appears it's the only thing left and right agree on, at least around these parts. A hysterical reaction.
