Instead of watching the Marathon on Patriots Day, everybody will be able to register for a Covid-19 shot

COVID-19 Update: March 17, 2021

Gov. Baker said today that the state will open its Covid-19 vaccination registration to everybody over 16 on April 19, which he noted for people who might otherwise have forgotten, is Patriots Day.

At a vaccination site in Brockton, wearing a green tie and carrying a green binder, Baker added that before then, people over 60 and "qualified workers" will be able to sign up for a shot starting March 22, while people 55 and older, or with one comorbidity, can start on April 5.

Baker emphasized that registering on the state sign-up site will not guarantee an immediate shot slot for eligible people, because demand continues to outpace the supply of vials allocated by the federal government. However, he noted that the weekly supply is slowly going up.

Baker added that it remains important, especially when we're "so close to the finish line," to keep up all the things we've been doing over the past year: Wearing masks, washing hands, distancing outside and getting tested if you feel sick or have come in contact with people who might be infected. Seriously, Baker said, get tested: It's free and widely available.

The system will be flooded on April 19th.

If you think it's a nightmare now ... just wait.

But this gives those eligible now a heads up on when so they can take time off beforehand to make a last attempt to get an appointment.

Unless Baker pirouettes again.

For everyone who had to "struggle" to get your shot in the past few weeks, you still got vaccinated 1-2 months before the rest of us.

How about those of us who are at minimal risk and not in close contact with anyone else, able to keep working from home for a while, don't have a burning desire to go someplace risky and are able to tough it out a little while longer, sit back a couple weeks and not flood the system when the starting gun goes off. Let others who need it more go first. I want the vaccine but I can wait a little longer and I suspect a lot of us can. Let's not mess this up, please.

Oh man, can you imagine how fast that system is going to crash! They are doing it on a State Holiday when workers will not be at their desks or couches working from home in flip flops.

The most vulnerable people have already been vaccinated. If the website(s) end up being overloaded don't spend all day refreshing since that will certainly make things worse, but if people wait around for weeks to sign up for an appointment then that just adds more time until we can get near herd immunity.

Not on the Cape. Distribution here is still a mess.

The state is recommending everyone register on the new system irrespective of what group you're in. It will send a message when an appointment is open based on what group you are in and the availability of the vaccine. There is nothing to mess up, at least not on the citizen's side. The only way to cheat would be to falsely claim you have a condition that puts you into an earlier eligibility group. (Like smoking.)

The current system is the one they should have had months ago.

With the current website there is no jumping in before others with the use of a website bot. And yes, I'm critical of people who used these bots and suggested they felt obligated to do so.

“struggle”? Sounds like sour grapes on your part.

Try being a 96 year old illiterate non English speaker like the guy who lives above me who hasn’t left the building in a year.

A few weeks ago there wasn't many shots to go around. This means some people -- even eligible and deserving people such as your neighbor -- would need to wait a few extra weeks.

The state should have never used a website in which the order of vaccination was determined by the speed in which someone could navigate the website. But it's not as if Baker was condemning your neighbor to death.

My annoyance is from people who suggest the state forced them to use a bot. They could have patiently checked the website every day until a spot opened and they'd still end up getting vaccinated before the general public.

If your neighbor still hasn't gotten his shot he can call the number, speak to someone who speaks his language, and get added to a system which will contact him (via phone, email, or text) when a spot is open.

... second shot soon because someone cared enough to notify a non profit with connections of his existence and the non profit was able to get hold of some federally allocated doses via CVS and arrange so that he could be vaccinated in a place he can get to.

Baker did zero for him. Baker shut off access by suspending hospital and community clinic supplies so he could hand out vaccines to plus ones that have the time, luxury and temerity and an available elder to travel to for profit mass vaccination sites not serviced by public transportation (Thanks also gov’, for your distaste for funding public transportation in general) The website was inaccessible to my neighbor, thanks again Chuckie. Too little too late with the phone assistance service also, which would have been useless to my neighbor who can barely hear.

You can kill people by willfully ignoring their existence and/or circumstances. Baker looks after his own, claims his fair hair is on fire and sheds a big boy tear. Not a tear for my neighbor or anyone genuinely struggling, but for Baker himself who doesn’t like having his poor governing skills pointed out to him.

Lots of eligible people are only now getting vaccinated. That's what happens when demand exceeds supply.

This is the classic trolly problem. What's more important, the total number of shots given or helping people who need extra assistance right away?

I agree with Baker on this. (A rarity.) Whatever can be done to maximize the number of vaccinations is the right decision. The community health centers will still get vaccine distributions but it won't happen until there is more supply.

People who need extra assistance will need to wait longer but they will have less chance of getting infected due to community transmission in the meantime. No one will be denied a shot.

“People who need extra assistance will need to wait longer but they will have less chance of getting infected due to community transmission in the meantime.”

Most of the younger community will not die or suffer long term from exposure. Many will never show symptoms. But it is still unknown how long the vaccine lasts and if being vaccinated also means no transmission. We are also dealing with new variants that appear to be more easily transmissible.

Funny that a non profit and a corporate with long time experience with administering federally supplied vaccinations were able last week to vaccinate over 100 high at risk individuals isolated from the community that Baker ignored in 2 and a half hours using 3 staff people on site.

Quality over quantity brings better results short term and long term.

Data from Israel and other counties make a convincing case that the vaccines are stopping transmission.

The fact there are variants is why it's so important to get as many people vaccinated as possible. EU Europe is taking their time and encountering a 3rd wave. Meanwhile the UK which has done a pretty good job at vaccinations are seeing their infection rates fall quickly.

It's unlikely we're going to agree, which is fine.

No, plenty of people who patiently check the website every day still don't have appointments even though they've been eligible for weeks. There are no appointments right now.

There are no appointments right now.

How do you square this with the fact that new appointments are posted often? @vaccinetime showed two batches of appointments posted today at CVS locations across the state, and what looks like about 1500 posted around the state yesterday.

Perhaps if you require an appointment at a particular location, you're going to have some issues. On the other hand, most people in the state are going to have to travel a pretty good distance to get a shot.

One co-morbidity was original at the bottom of the same group as the two co-morbidities and now it has been pushed down.

is easier than getting an effing appointment.
