Boston's existing Black newspaper blasts new Globe/BU anti-racism effort as 'subtly hostile to Blacks'

The Bay State Banner is no fan of the Emancipator, a new Web site by the Globe op-ed department and Boston University's Center for Antiracist Research - starting with its name.

Even with its best intentions, the Emancipator was an organization of substantial white men to eliminate slavery. Its objective now, apparently, is to end white racism. That is a cultural impediment of white Americans. Nonetheless, the name "Emancipator" still implies that Blacks are the ones impaired by slavery or its aftereffects.

In fact, the involvement of Dr. Kendi emphasizes that opinion. He is perceived to be a missionary to whites afflicted with racism. That perception is not mitigated by an advisory board that includes a number of people who are respected in journalism or Black studies.

And don't get them started on the Globe:

The involvement of the Boston Globe as a partner in the enterprise does little to elevate the trust and confidence of Black citizens of Boston. Over the years the Boston Globe has not been overly friendly to the development of Black institutions in Boston.

The subtle hostility to Blacks might help the program gain the support of recalcitrant whites. That would be the objective after all. It seems unlikely that the Globe would become more trusted and supported by Blacks.

Anti Racist writer and scholar who runs an anti-racist University program teams up with a female Indian Op-Ed director to produce an anti-racist website and the Bay State Banner subtly and not so subtly implies that the endeavor is ill informed at best and racist at worst? Is it possible that the Banner does not like having it's feet stepped on?

That much of white-led "antiracism" is actually about white feels and not about actual progress.

I've seen this carnival multiple times - EST x Original Sin = "antiracism" has been around a long time without producing much in the way of validated results, but the consultants and trainers continue to sell their wares as if it has. 30 years of this is enough to know better, and yet somehow putting "systemic" on it and keeping up the focus on individual white feels makes it new?

Anything aimed at "hearts and minds" isn't going to break down the structures or racism or undo the legacy of redlining, GI Bill restrictions, treatment of minorities by power structures, or anything meaningful.

was his take on white progressives. Malcolm X nailed it. His observations of his time are still largely true today. Whites who claim to "elevate black voices" are usually just talking over black people w/o really listening.

I certainly don't have the answers to life, the universe, and everything, but my understanding of racism has been greatly improved by 1) talking less, and 2) making friends with and listening to black people.

No one of any race is truly 100% racism/prejudiced free, but as long as we try to see each other as individuals with the starting presumption that the individual is a good person until proven otherwise, we'll be making progress

unless i’m mistaken, it seems like the brainchild of two persons of color, bankrolled by a major newspaper.

A line I Iearned on Unraveling our Colonized Minds/face book. "The spirit gave us 1 mouth and 2 ears" I thinks it is a pitty that .somewhere, every child did not hear this instead of heavy handed lectures. maybe we could listen quite naturally,

The irony of those words about trusting both parties in these inter-racial discussions are sincere and honest in their statements ( "a good person until proven otherwise,). Long ago when there was still a ruling class of landed elite, this was expected of "gentlemen"- who came to call it liberalism It always saddens me that as we worked to dethrone the landed non working elite, this word came to be a slur almost identical to "commie!"

Wouldn't it be nice if we had such thoughts of others instead of dividing along battle lines where power moves and guile are presumed,

Now the Boston Globe and Dr. Ibram X. Kendi have collaborated to launch a new media platform which they have named “The Emancipator,” the same name as the nation’s first anti-slavery publication. The problem is that the original Emancipator was to unify abolitionists. Slavery was rendered officially illegal in 1865. However, there are still many strategies to hold Blacks essentially in bondage.

Even with its best intentions, the Emancipator was an organization of substantial white men to eliminate slavery. Its objective now, apparently, is to end white racism. That is a cultural impediment of white Americans. Nonetheless, the name “Emancipator” still implies that Blacks are the ones impaired by slavery or its aftereffects.

Here's an answer for the first part you bolded: Experts Explain the Slavery Loophole in the 13th Amendment.

You can watch the Netflix produced documentary on YouTube for free, for a full history overview: https://youtu.be/krfcq5pF8u8

Scratchie has a good answer down below for the second part you bolded.

that first blockquote taken in its entirety seems to argue *for* the revival of the Emancipator, but perhaps under another name? but the tone seems to be arguing ...something else? am i missing something?

And I may not ...

What they're arguing is that the Emancipator was a publication by White people for White people (well meaning White people, but still). And the name harkens to a period when Blacks were slaves. So now we have an attempt by a White-owned publication (the Globe) to make Whites feel better in their role as allies or something, but Blacks have moved beyond that and the BU guy should stop with his role as a missionary to Whites.

It's sort of similar to the argument about moving the "Emancipator" statue of Lincoln out of Park Square: Yes, Lincoln may have ordered slaves in Southern states (but not border Northern states like Maryland) free, but today the first thing that hits you about the statue is basically a fully clothed White guy towering over a cowering half-naked Black guy.

so the beef is with the name then. i get it but in this case the argument feels a little reductive.

The ironic thing about the original Lincoln sculpture was that it was created by a Black man I am not sure this has been included in local discussions before its removal. I only learned about the latter from a national news program.

Nonetheless, the name "Emancipator" still implies that Blacks are the ones impaired by slavery or its aftereffects.

What they are saying is that the name "Emancipator" puts the focus on Black people. If white racism is to be eliminated (or even reduced), the focus must be put on white people.

though i don’t necessarily agree in this case. to me, Emancipator has a different meaning here coming from two persons of color.

Is the bay state banner written in AAVE? If not is it even credible ?

Would you ask a similar question about whether Joyce or Beckett were authentic for having written in the King's English? Well, assuming you know who they are.

I wasn’t Alive when James Joyce or Samuel Beckett wrote so I probably wouldn’t have made that joke.

Beckett’s English may be close to the King’s. For an Irishman who lived in Paris.

But Joyce’s is his own. He was a true Irish writer. Some might be offended.

I'm Black and I don't appreciate the Banner trying to say how the black community feels because I don't think it's accurate. Nor do we dislike the Globe. We dislike the Herald.

We don't give a damn about the name 'Emancipator'. Seriously. Whatever your beef is, that's YOUR beef.

Always preaching moderation over there at the Banner and now they want to be woke. Naw.
