Lynn business owner who thinks masks spread Covid-19 faces fines for making workers, customers unmask

WBZ reports OSHA plans to fine Ariana Murrell-Rosario, owner of Liberty Tax Service in Lynn more than $136,000, unless she can give it a really good reason why she made her employees and customers remove their masks when they entered the business.

She claims the masks actually spread the disease and OSHA should mind its own damn business and stop pandering to what she says are fear-mongering state officials.

More from OSHA.

Why does a tax service even need a physical office?

Mine lives on the cape. I get emailed a link to a secure online binder. I upload PDFs (or pictures) my stuff, a few days later, he sends me over the efile signature & return itself form via DocuSign. Once I sign, he files me, and then I get a paper copy a few days later with a bill for services rendered.

I haven't stepped foot in his office for taxes in... well ever.

As a tax preparer I'll tell you why:

-Not everyone has a phone/scanner/ability to upload.
-Some of our older clients don't like/trust/understand technology to upload.
-Some people like a more personal service.

Probably don't want to get vaccinated either.

Wait until she sees the novel class-action suit supported by expert testimony that this affects everyone.

Until the Supreme Court overturns Jacobson v. Massachusetts (which involved a Cambridge minister who didn't want to let his kids get vaccinated in the middle of a smallpox outbreak), such a case is likely doomed to failure, because courts keep upholding the right of the government to impose emergency orders during public-health emergencies.

in her ability to successfully complete my taxes that she’s so willfully ignorant of basic facts of public health.

If her tax law interpretations are as spot on as her medical knowledge, I’m guessing her clients should be prepared to be audited after she advises them that claiming their dog/cat as a dependent is perfectly legal.

(“...the IRS should just mind their own damn business, you bought all their food and gave them a free place to live, they’re totally dependent on you to live....”)

How much do you want to bet she has one of these "hilarious" signs:

I wonder what corporate thinks.

At this time of year it seems like you can't turn around without falling over a tax service, so this seems like a spectacularly bad business decision. Kudos to whoever reported her, and I'm amazed that she even had any customers.

She says the masks could have herpes or HIV on them. She has quite some imagination about what people do with their masks.

Herpes, huh? It's been declining but if you are an American adult you are about as likely to have herpes as to not have it.

you're not supposed to wear other people's masks - she knows that right? If it's your own mask, you already have those things. What a stupid argument.

She doesn't actually care about the facts.

Oral herpes is a thing, and can be either HSV-1 or HSV-2. I don't imagine it lives a super long time on masks, though. And don't share your mask with someone you're not on kissin' terms with, obviously.

I can't imagine having someone this ignorant and uninformed handling my taxes. I bet she follows the math just like she follows the science.

I couldn't see having somebody that willfully ignorant and irresponsible handling my taxes, either. People like the woman in question are the reason that the Covid-19 virus and resulting pandemic are running so rampant and so out of control here in the United States, and that the covid-19 incidences are as high as they are.
