One end of Centre Street in Jamaica Plain becomes too pricey for a 7-Eleven
By adamg on Thu, 04/15/2021 - 2:43pm
The 7-Eleven at 684 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain is closing, which will force Pondsiders who need some Gatorade or scratchies at 2 a.m. to shlep all the way up to South Huntington for the next closest 7-Eleven. Read more.
Word in the Jamaica Plain Facebook group is that the landlord is raising the rent to bank-type levels and the 7-Eleven franchisee noped out of that idea.

It used to be Kelleher's
It used to be Kelleher's Supermarket back in the day.
I only knew the Corinth Street one.
This shit is gonna keep happening so long as retail rents keep going up, and it looks like the trend might continue for the forseeable future. Not sure what can be done here -- I'm all for things like taxing the hell out of vacant retail spaces to discourage overly aggressive rent raise, or maybe offer tax incentives for businesses that aren't bank branches or real estate offices?
Perhaps I'm out of the loop on these things
But isn't retail dead? Why are retail rents heading up?
valuations are wack
Apparently valuations are based more on projected future rents than current revenues, so it pays for building owners to keep spaces vacant and chase higher rents rather than filling them ASAP. Also, in general real estate around here is going nowhere except up. I've heard it theorized that this will remain the case so long as interest rates remain at 0.
On the upside.
That means one less place that sells tobacco products in JP and making it a little harder for smokers to impose their smoke on other people.
We're not just a little bit
We're not just a little bit too much focused on a single issue are we? Poor little kids need milk, but at least the old guy can't get a pack of smokes as easily.
Those evil smokers.. *eye roll*
How about now a lack of place to get milk or food after 9pm? I think 7-11 is overpriced but if its after 10pm and I need some milk or ice cream. Its there...
There's always Whole Foods
Yes, this is what this part of JP has become. It's a shame.
This is the other 7-11
Down by the JP Licks.
Would you rather have an satellite Amazon?
How about another bank?
You must be kidding.
You don’t think that a smoker will buy their cigarettes elsewhere and just smoke in JP?
How about a peloton store?
Maybe a fancy boutique gym?
Oh, I know, a mini Walmart?
Better yet. Why don’t you pay the rent?
I’ve got the solution.
An empty storefront!!!
That’ll be good for the neighborhood.
Your child needs some milk late night?
You have a headache and need some aspirin?
Just go to the empty storefront!
You’re all set.
And what about the jobs that those without tech degrees need?
God forbid that a struggling student can pick up
a few shifts and pay their bills.
You’re a real winner, buddy!!
Not my favorite 7-Eleven! :0[
This is the old Store24. I thought it was the former Christie’s!
I thought of Christie's today
When I was reading the article about the Aldens CFO charged with embezzling $30M to prop up Bianca de la Garza's lifestyle. Some older men just can't be trusted around money.
Yeah... on that too.
Even David Wade smartened up after a while...
You know gentrification is
You know gentrification is bad when corporate chains/franchises can get chased out! Another generation they'll be nothing left of this once glorious city.
not gentrification in this incidence
This is just a result of asset prices continuing to rise and rise and prices becoming disconnected from revenue. Maybe if this spot was gonna be filled by a luxury boutique I'd agree that it's gentrification, but apparently it's gonna be yet another fucking bank branch.
The 7-Eleven is sandwiched between Citizens Bank, the Goodwill store, a CVS, an upscale stationery store, and the Purple Cactus. They may put a variety of things in that space, but you can bet it will be an entity that can shell out the big bucks in rent.
Now that's what I call diversity
Throw in that second hand store and you can support your family.
You know who opposes banks?
That Liz Warren fella. How did she fare in the primary? Oh yeah, we picked MBNA-humper Joe Biden instead.
This is the outcome of making a choice because you’re afraid of someone in Florida or Pennsylvania picking the Cheeto. Enjoy your sterile commercial block and your Doordashed nocturnal groceries. Don’t forget to tip.
How is there room for language in your head with all the toxic ideologies and people living there rent-free?
We elect our peers
And I call my peers "fella."
