From Deflategate to Trumpgate

The Washington Post reports on new allegations that it was none other than a pre-White House TV game-show host who offered a payoff to a US senator to end a probe into Deflategate. The Patriots responded that, if true, Robert Kraft had nothing to do with it.

Deflategate, or Spygate?

While the timeline says that Spector was 6 feet under the ground when the Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts to make it to the Super Bowl, the article does specifically note that it was Spygate and a 2008 investigation.

The Trump crime family has been breaking every law they encountered for decades. They deserve RICO prosecution, and I hope it results in jail time.

BTW, I hate the Washington Post website, because they don't let me read their stories. Instead, they insist I have to subscribe. Which I won't.

Update: It appears that the Manhattan DA agrees with my opinion of the Trump crime family:

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance is likely considering criminal charges centered around the idea that the Trump Organization is a "corrupt enterprise" under a New York state racketeering statute resembling the federal RICO law — an abbreviation for the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, which was passed in 1970 to crack down on pervasive organized crime — several legal experts and former prosecutors told Politico.

HOW DARE THEY ASK YOU TO PAY FOR A PRODUCT THAT COSTS MONEY TO PRODUCE.

Full disclosure: WaPo subscriber here.

Sure, people should be willing to pay for news if they want to read it. But it would be nice to know that a subscription is required before clicking on the link, reading the intro, scrolling down, and running into the paywall. There should be a way to "warn" you. Doesn't Wikipedia have a different color for names that don't have their own pages?

Don’t read it.

Do you work without pay?

If only they had stories I want to read more than once a month, I'd consider it. Since they don't, I'll read about it somewhere that has more reasonable policies. Since you pay them money, I assume you read them a lot.

[Edit:] Here's the original story, published free of paywall by ESPN. So, it's not like the WP is offering unique content not available elsewhere for free.

ESPN's content is not free, it just happens that either you are paying for it with a cable subscription, or someone else is paying for it with theirs.

None of the above. I just went to the ESPN website, through a link at The Guardian. I didn't watch the video, just read the text story. I have no ESPN subscription, or membership, or whatever. I don't even have cable.

Hope you enjoy paying for your second-hand news!

I promise you I am not subscribing to the Post for their sports section.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. Really.

IDK if the story about Trump trying to bribe a Senator was in the sports section of the WP, because they wouldn't let me read it. Whether it was or not, the story was originated by the sports outlet ESPN, so they seem to consider it sports-related. You disavow interest in the WP sports section, but here you are, commenting on this story....

You can tell it is in the sports section just from looking at the URL Adam linked to, which I assume you clicked on before it told you that it wouldn't let you read it if you didn't subscribe. So you did make it that far.

I don't know why we have veered so far off topic here, I think we agree that it is wrong to try to entice an elected official to drop an investigation with promises of money, whether it be cash or campaign donations. That's why I opened the story, not because it involves a local sports team.

Sort of a catch 22, innt? whining about the wp asking you to pay while also claiming they have nothing you want read is sure something, though.

I know because other sites I read (like this one) link to WP stories from time to time. It's very rare that I feel the need to read their stuff, and if I do, it's always available somewhere else, with a little searching. When I forget that going there is a waste of my time, and click on the WP link like I did today, it annoys me. I certainly wouldn't use the WP as a major source of news; I go with less corporate sources.

Be happy in your ignorance of the pluses and minuses of wapo reporting of which you are obviously not in a position to judge, and stop complaining that they’re asking you to pay for their labor.

WaPo sells individual "issues" for Kindle. They're very inexpensive.

I don't. They are not very inexpensive.

Interesting set of names. Robert Kraft (of strip mall massage parlor fame as well as major football team owner), Tom Brady, now known for the depth of his fan loyalty, Roger Stone and Donald Trump.

Add a monopolistic NFL and wafts of "friendly handshakes," fancy dinners, ego stroking...I see a riveting Hollywood movie in this miasmic mess.
