Good news for people worried West Roxbury doesn't have enough bank branches

The Zoning Board of Appeal on Tuesday considers a proposal to replace the BP station on Centre Street at Belgrade Avenue in West Roxbury with a brand-new bank branch with a drive-up window.

The listed applicant is Power Test Realty Co., an arm of Getty Realty of Jericho, NY, which bought up Getty stations across the Northeast in 1985. The company kept the real estate, but eventually sold the petroleum wing of the business to Lukoil, a Russian oil company.

The hearing agenda does not name the bank that is hot to serve well heeled West Roxbury residents and commuters on the heavily traveled West Roxbury Parkway a block away.

The board's Zoomed hearings begin at 9:30 a.m.

Rockland Trust recently announced it would shut the East Boston Savings Bank branch on Centre Street after it merges with that bank, several years after it shut the Peoples Federal Savings Bank branch on Centre Street after it acquired that bank. Chase Bank, however, installed a couple of ATMs on Centre Street a couple years ago.

Where am I going to be my car inspected now?

I am not surprised this lot is being renovated but I am surprised it's not housing.

Get my sticker too. I think the gas station next to Hynes does inspections still, could be wrong.

Are there still people who not know about online banking?

Still need to visit a branch (or ATM) to deposit a check, for those who can’t afford smartphones.

Good news for the people who don't want to stop at red lights and swerve through bank parking lots to make their turns at the Corey and Lagrange Street intersections.

I admit I don't spend a lot of time at that intersection (except once a year when I get my car inspected there) to see if people avoid the light there by racing across the gas-station lot.

I’ve seen it one or twice in the past TEN years.

The double parking on the other side of the street is the real issue.

NO MORE BANKS. West Roxbury is a fucking cultural desert of banks and insurance office and realtors. Good LORD if we can't get something actually valuable, at least they could put housing on the land. Hell, letting it run over wild and suck some carbon out of the air from the hundreds of double parkers on the other side of the street would be more valuable than ANOTHER. GODDAMN. BANK.

You’re right, West Roxbury feels like a cultural desert. We struggle to get and retain high value, interesting businesses. There’s no trick to this. The road is a four lane freeway, inhospitable to people, and therefore business.
Rozzie and even Dedham Square have left Centre Street in the dust. Traffic patterns are safe, slow, streets are easy to cross. It’s enticing for entrepreneurs.
We’ve watched the restaurant on corner of Hastings go out of business three times in a decade. Prime location, beautiful space. Why? Perhaps the street keeps people away.
