Guy gets out of car with a hammer and smashes elderly man in the shin on Columbia Road in Dorchester, police say

Guy with hammer

Hammer man. Surveillance photos via BPD.

Boston Police are seeking help to identify and capture somebody they say got out of a car at Columbia Road and Washington Street in Dorchester with a hammer and, without any provocation, bashed an elderly man in the shin around 1:50 p.m. on Sunday.

The hammer guy, described as black, in his 40s, 6 feet tall and 200 lbs., then got back in the car and fled, police say. The victim was taken to a local hospital.

The attacker was photographed with the hammer in front of 108 Columbia Rd., the apartment building directly across Washington from the Burger King.

If he looks familiar, contact detectives at 617-343-4275 or the anonymous tip line by calling 800-494-TIPS or by texting TIP to CRIME (27463).

What a horribly strange thing to do.

It takes a special kind of person to jump out of a car and randomly hit an old man...

Yeah, I'm surprised he's not a cop.

Why?

What makes you think it was random? (I have no reason to believe either that it was random or that it was targeted…)

I'd like to think if the person knew the attacker, we'd have a name with the article.. If not, he didn't know who it was.

Or poor reporting on Adam's part (which I think is unlikely)

... You piss off the wrong guy, who then sends a thug to smash your knee with a hammer, you're not necessarily gonna recognize the thug.

I can just imagine. At that intersection - possibly an argument about the light changing/right of way kind of confrontation. Could be something personal. Who knows.

Just wrong, period. Hopefully the gentleman will make a speedy recovery and anyone who knows this guy will turn him in or convince him to do so himself. Not safe for him to be roaming around if he did what is alleged.

Was there really no provocation? Pedestrians around here often don't yield to cars and being otherwise aggressive.

No traffic provocation could ever justify whacking a senior with a 20oz (maybe bigger!) ball peen hammer. Ever. MC Hammerhead was the aggressor. he's a sick puppy and needs to be kept away from society.

There's a difference between justify and explain. Of course road rage does not justify escalation to violence, but it can explain it.

In too many reported incidents there's an avoidance to provide 'explanation', maybe out of fear of being called a victim blamer. This results in an increase in reporting of actual senseless violence. It also leads to an increase in claims of racism, facism, Trumpism, hate crimes, etc since those are simple explanations to latch on to, when you're missing the details about interpersonal encounters and conflicts that happen in society that sometimes escalate to violence due to bad temperaments.

Exactly, not trying to justify this accident. I hope the guy gets the harshest continuation without finding that the Suffolk County has seen in recent years.

We shouldn't point to simple explanations like racism, fascism, Trumpism, when we can point to more complicated issues like "maybe someone was parking badly".

There's a difference between justify and explain.

The word used was "provocation", which is neither "justify" nor "explain", but is a lot closer to the former than to the latter.

If a pedestrian was failing to yield to a car while on the sidewalk, I don't really see how that's the pedestrian's fault.

Another word for "people can't possibly ever be expected to just fucking control their goddamn selves".

Especially male people.

Cars are supposed to yield to pedestrians, not the other way around

As a comment on this incident? Seriously? For starters, the suspect isn't young.

I mean, you say he's straight, so ... TURN HIM IN!

Dude, I don't know where you're getting your insider information, but I'd say this guy's orientation is "deranged".

that you are *just* discovering this piece 4 years after its initial run around the internet is funny enough on its own.

then of course, that you didn’t bother to read it is just peak reactionary internet

The view is from public property - there's evidently a high-res camera hidden in the lamppost, filming the sidewalk and possibly people's windows at 108 Columbia? Not cool.

There is no expectation of privacy in public. One could stand on a public sidewalk and use a camera to zoom into you window legally. This is a 1st Amendment Right. You are responsible for creating the privacy in your home not the public. Rights are very cool indeed.

It's either from the apartment building or one of the many traffic lights at that intersection.
