Reminds me of this video I saw a couple weeks ago if of a dirt bike guy flying into a parked car on Boylston St.

Not that there is any indication of this at all, but if the scooter driver here is part of one of those dirt bike gangs that have been such a nuisance and a safety threat to so many, then I would find it very difficult to have any kind of sympathy.

You're right. There isn't any indication of this at all.

I really wonder at the astonishing genetic superiority of some of you, who clearly never did a boneheaded thing as a teen nor are parents of teens who do boneheaded things.

If he dies from his injuries, his mother will pretty much cry herself to sleep every night for the rest of her life. And that he died doing something stupid and irresponsible won't enter into that in the slightest.

“…if the scooter driver here is part of one of those dirt bike gangs….”

Are you going to be one of the gloaters?

Big difference between gloating and not sympathizing. I know you know that.

You're gloating right now. Your comment was entirely gratuitous, the feeble disclaimer notwithstanding. It had no relevance, and you made it for a reason, and that reason was to gloat.

Not that there is any indication you know what I know.

That's what insurance is for.

How do you know the teen scooter driver has health insurance that will cover all of his medical expenses from this crash?

That pays for the damage. What did the car do? Nothing. Why should the owner have to pay for someone being an idiot?

before driving into a parked car

… like if he was wearing a helmet, it would have been okay. Doesn’t sound like he suffered any head injuries but but he hurt his leg very badly. Should he have been wearing a helmet on his leg?
It will be interesting to find out what caused him to drive into a parked car. I hope he recovers.

Foam hats and paint save lives and if you aren't to it the assumption is that you had it coming

I’m guessing stupidity caused him to drive into a parked car while not wearing a helmet.

… rode my bike into a parked car. I was not wearing a helmet. I landed on the roof. If you think it was stupidity that caused me to do that, you are wrong. It was self preservation. I was being chased by two large dogs belonging to a nutcase who encouraged them to terrorize the neighborhood.
No reasons were reported why this kid did what he did.

…. are gloating right now. They won’t come right out and say so because they know how that looks.
But if this were some young suburban kid who got hurt doing risky stuff on the ski slopes or because he was inexperienced playing lacrosse, the compassion would be boundless.

Really, no.

If some suburban kid got hurt running into a parked car while skiing, playing lacrosse, fencing, sculling, sailing, dressage, or even doing a foxtrot at a debutante ball, I'd still laugh my ass off.

A car's what, five feet tall and six feet wide? 30 square feet of unmoving wall in front of him and this kid ran right into it on a device that he can stop and steer? That's a special lack of situational awareness.

My Lord, that parked car jumped out right in front of that poor boy!

I have a certain level of distain for scooter drivers who disregard, in this case, basic common sense.

And suburban kids who get hurt doing similar mindless stuff engender a similar response.

I draw the line on death due to such activities. That I feel bad for. A kid I knew died when he drove into the side of a bus on Boston Street in Dorchester. He was 14. Not the smartest of moves, but a life cut way too short. Compared to that, this kid is lucky.

I'm sure the scooter was purchased legally, registered, and fully insured...
