So which group of Boston-area high schoolers decided to be maskless assholes and get a flight to the Bahamas canceled?

Go Vikings! WHDH reports the rebels without a mask were from Winthrop.

Seems a group of kids from an as yet unnamed Boston-area high school were booked on American Airlines flight 893 from Charlotte, NC to the Bahamas on Monday, but they refused to wear masks like they were supposed to, so the whole flight got canceled.

The only good news: The airline gave out hotel vouchers for the night, but teenagers can't get hotel rooms on their own, so they had to spend the night in the airport.

And why was the flight canceled?

Flight attendant reminds kids they need to put their masks on.
Kids refuse.
Plane goes back to the gate.
Kids are removed from the plane by security and handed over to the authorities.
Plane continues on its way.

Good news; kids don't have to sleep on the airport floor!

…. to children, why would we impose a lifetime ban on them?

So you never did anything stupid as a teenager?

up
Voting closed 0

Not that affected that many people.

Not with that many chances to undo.

But the airlines shouldn't give them a lifetime ban, not if they aren't doing it for other antimasker fecal matter.

Five years on the no-fly list would be a good length of time to think about it.

I'm sure their parents are soooooo proud.

They should also have to take Greyhound back to Boston - 5 at a time.

This is the ONLY report that makes it sound like the poor little children were just picked on.

You, sir, are gullible - that headline should read "Tour Operator WHO DOESN'T WANT TO BE SUED OR PAY OUT TRIP INSURANCE ..."

Read better, dear. Here's what the PASSENGERS had to say about the incident: https://nypost.com/2021/07/06/american-airlines-flight-to-bahamas-cancel...

That our resident Orangeman considers the New York Post to be a good news source. Wait, it would appear you are saying it is superior to the Boston Globe.

Strange times.

With a leap like that, you'll definitely be bringing back the gold from Tokyo, champ.

I mean, learning now that she is a regular New York Post reader just adds to the suspicion.

You really are on a roll lately, aren't you? Posting one link to the New York Post makes one a "regular reader"? This is almost as bad as your "Hymietown" derangement in the school board thread. Seriously, what's wrong with you?

These knuckleheads didnt put on masks.

…I’m not saying I know what the perfect punishment/rehabilitation is for those two, but very few are rooting for them to be free-and-clear simply because they turned 21.

As for the Bahamas flight, I would favor some sort of ban until every single person who lost a flight, hotel, diner, or other reservation/$$$ was reimbursed triple damages by the families of these children who acted up.

People who've lived here all their lives also publicize events on "the commons" and people refer to "Penney's" and "Nordstrom's" but it doesn't mean they should. The letter S does not deserve such abuse.

A go-to North End Italian restaurant was, for years in the 1950s and 1960s, "Stella's"

Except that it was not owned by or named after a woman named Stella; it was called "Stella d'Italia," or "Star of Italy."

The Commons. The Gardens. McLean's. Stella's. Resistance to the S is futile.

I guess you didn't get the reference to Jonathan Swift's 'A Modest Proposal'. It's where there's a whiff (or heavy dose) of sarcasm in the air around what the author is saying... jeez. A little reading of the classics goes a long way.

After Dr. Dao incident with United Express in Chicago airlines realized it was easier to cancel the whole flight than try to deal with one or a couple troublemakers in front of a plane full of camera-toting fellow passengers.

In the time it took to return to the gate and evict the jackasses, various timing windows might have expired, for example max permissible duty time for the crew, or landing slots at the destination. Or possibly a secondary effect: the airplane could have reached its destination but not have enough crew duty time left to return, leaving an aircraft and crew stuck at the destination, possibly a location where the airline doesn’t have crew basing or maintenance, causing worse schedule problems than just canceling the one flight would have caused.

I’m in my 40s and have never been anywhere tropical (does Orlando/Coco Beach count?). I know, boo-freakin’-hoo, lol. But the point is that if you offered me a chance as a teen to to go to the Bahamas and I was required to wear [insert embarrassing ensamble here, I’m thinking Borat bikini but YMMV], I would wear it proudly.

Sure, this is just another version of a “kids are spoiled and don’t know how good they have it” rant, but god damn.

I don't like the Carribean (too hot and sweaty) but my senior class went to the Bahamas and loved it.

It'd be very interesting to find out what Boston suburb these students came from...however, they played a stupid game and won a stupid prize of being marooned at the airport while other passengers got a nice, comfy hotel for the night.

EDIT: It's Winthrop High school.

EDIT #2: See Refugee's post below re: one student getting kicked off while an adult didn't, thus starting the whole brouhaha.

My son's classmates put together a trip to the Dominican Republic. I asked him if he wanted to go (not sanctioned by the school, of course!)

My son's reaction: "this has bad idea written all over it". He also didn't want to be stuck at a resort - he prefers touring.

One of his classmates is a quadruplegic now - and not for the reasons you might think He had a relatively common "dive in and hit another swimmer" accident while sober, and the bungled rescue response caused additional damage, as did the inability of the local clinic to treat the injury. There were no backboards in the area, apparently. They had to do a Go Fund Me to pay for the medical flight back to the US to salvage what they could.

I don't object to young people traveling (I let my teen sons roam European countries solo while I was at conferences) so long as they understand that 1) the world isn't their playground; 2) bad things can happen to well-behaved people; 3) do your research about what can happen when things go wrong.

I went to Montreal with my classmates in junior year. The trip was by ~7 hours by bus - and while my intention was touring the city, my classmates thought it would be a great idea to let loose with a little bit of chemical enhancement.

On the way there, one classmate decided to bring their own elixir - SoCo and fruit juice. They got hammered off of that...and when we had our bus refueling/lunch break in New Hampshire, they passed out and fell asleep...or so we thought.

We tried to arouse them, but it turned out they actually had acute alcohol poisoning. Once the ambulance took our classmate to a hospital to dry out, the local constabulary arrived and ordered all booze and liquor dumped out in front of them before we could proceed north.

That incident put the fear of God into me, and it's the one of the reasons why I don't drink booze.

Your classmates got off light, as did all supervising adults.

When I was growing up (70s, 80s) the cops/rangers would confiscate unopened booze and beer from the underage crowd and redistribute it to adults in the area so that they could avoid the paperwork.

Attitudes have changed in 40 years.

Forget their age for a moment. Why would people who’s behavior got a flight canceled be given a hotel voucher from the airline?

up
Voting closed 0

The airline gave out hotel vouchers for the night, but teenagers can't get hotel rooms on their own, so they had to spend the night in the airport.

As the next flight out wasn't until the morning, the airline put up the adult passengers into the local hotel as a courtesy. The teenagers were forced to spend the night inside the airport (likely to sleep on benches, etc.) because the minimum age to rent a room is 18.

EDIT: See above - the flight crew is only allowed to fly for a certain amount of hours, hence they couldn't fly out unless they had a relief crew; it was better to deplane the passengers and put them up in the hotel room until they got a fresh crew to fly out in the morning.

up

As you say, it was a courtesy. Airlines are careful to avoid actually being obligated to put up passengers when they're stranded for any reason, including reasons that are the airline's fault.

I love the ideas of these kids attempting to sleep on plastic chairs or the floor and constantly being rousted by security or cleaning crews.

There was passenger rights legislation that happened, in part, because so many US Reps and Senators fly frequently and were fed up with airline nonsense.

Those rights are covered, here:

The story doesn't add up. The kids from Boston made it from Logan to Charlotte (presumably wearing masks). Then there was a mechanical delay. Then over 20 out of the 30 kids started a "mask rebellion that lasted for hours". Then the flight got cancelled and everyone was given vouchers?

It sounds like something else happened that caused the flight to get cancelled, and the mask rebellion was just a sideshow.

(edit: The mom's retelling to WHDH makes more sense. One kid was ejected for not wearing a mask. Later, another adult passenger on the flight was not wearing a mask and was not ejected. The other kids witnessed that uneven enforcement and protested. After two hours of mechanical delay and changing planes, the entire group of kids was not allowed to board.)

I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was probably aliens. I have incontrovertible evidence, which I can't share at the moment, that American Airlines is run by lizard-people. Where was the flight going? The Bahamas. You've heard about the Bermuda Triangle, but that's just a cover story. The staging area for The Invasion is actually in the Bahamas. They were probably afraid that these Freedom Fighters would foil their nefarious plans.

These little special privileged snotbags delayed the flight so long that the crew timed out.

Stop making excuses for your ill-behaved children/friends.

No, we do not know what happened. We only know what was reported.

Whenever there's an accusation directed at a large, loosely connected group of people, take it with a grain of salt. The most plausible explanation is that WSOC's reporting was skewed, not that 46 kids suddenly became anti-maskers on the way to a fun vacation.

up
Voting closed 0

It seems more like a dispute between American Airlines and the group of teens, more than anything about the reporting. And frankly, between a crappy airline and a group of 46 high schoolers, I'm sure there was plenty of blame to go around.

Privileged pukes who live within 100 miles of the city love to tell people they come from Boston, especially when they behave like A-holes. As for MFA, no one has a monopoly on stereotyping, as you prove with your comment.

Not for nothing, but the residents of Winthrop are geographically closer to "Boston" than say, residents of Readville.

"Boston" in quotation marks above should be interpreted to be what people not from the area would consider to be Boston, rather than the large geographic boundaries I'm hoping everyone on this here website knows exist.

As it was expected, the today's Boston Globe article gives a more objective account of the incident. And it makes AA look pretty bad. They tried to use one student as a scapegoat for their mechanical failure and resulting cancellation.

Investigate and punish them.

What the tour agency, which really really does not want to be held financially responsible, said is truth.

Right.

So, how many of these kids are in your family/friends families? I remember how you used to declare any urban crime a capital offense but your friends' kids spraying swastikas on a monument was just a silly kid thing.

Again, listen to the passengers who were on that plane: https://nypost.com/2021/07/06/american-airlines-flight-to-bahamas-cancel...
