Hyde Park pool shut after Covid-19 case

DCR reports it closed the Olsen Swimming Pool on Turtle Pond Parkway yesterday after learning somebody associated with the pool - who had last been there yesterday - had tested positive for Covid-19.

The pool and its grounds will be "deep cleaned and sanitized," DCR said, adding it does not know when the pool will re-open.

How do organizations and people still not know that COVID is not transmitted on surfaces? It’s airborne. “Deep cleaning” is entirely theater that accomplishes nothing. Closing the pool after the infected person was there does nothing.

Things like this actually reduce my confidence in the organization, because how can you keep people safe when you refuse to learn about the illness?

Unfortunately, given the level of misinformation, there are probably a lot of people who would have stopped going to the pool or who will think this "deep cleaning" to be is useful and necessary.

And turn on a fan.

That's really all that is necessary!

I'm 100% for safety measures, but given the research that says Covid isn't easy to transmit via surfaces, is this really helping?

Either DCR is not following the science and public health recommendations and doesn’t understand that “deep cleaning” is an utterly irrelevant response to an airborne respiratory pathogen, or they know it full well but are doing it anyway as some kind of cynical, performative bullshit. I don’t know which would annoy me more.

Wouldn't that be funny (in a ridiculous sort of way) if they still did the deep cleaning even after last night's thunderstorm?

even if one or more people there have had COVID recently?

Deep cleaning companies are doing well though.

OK So...

Q: What was the biggest thing we sold out of last year besides masks and hand sanitizer?
A: Anything with bleach because it is effective at killing the virus

Q. What's the main chemical used in keeping pools clean?
A: Chlorine.

Q. What's the main chemical in household bleach?
A. Chlorine

Q. Do public pools tend to use more Chlorine or less Chlorine than household pools?
A. They tend to use more

Soooooooooooooooooo why are we cleaning a pool again? Seems to me that the pool would just clean it self. And all the surfaces that came in contact with anyone dripping in pool water.

Maybe they should also require everyone to wear masks while swimming.

but theater isn’t always pointless

They'd probably fish it out and close the pool for an hour and then be right back in business.

Nah.

There is a protocol to follow for solid feces incidents that is intended to keep the closure time to 30 minutes.

There is a shortage of lifeguards. They may need to wait until everyone is tested.

They could reopen it the day after the lifeguard was last there, but as his co-workers will most likely be in quarantine, and given the well reported shortage of lifeguards, it's probably best for the pool to be closed for a bit.

The water should be "cleaned," but that would be the case even if urine was the worst problem. It probably couldn't hurt to clean the changing rooms (or whatever they are called,) but again, I would imagine that this cleaning would have been a regular thing in 2019. In short, I would hope that the DCR was cleaning their facilities back when the city of Wuhan was unknown to most of the world.
