Man was driving around John Eliot Square with a loaded gun, police say

Boston Police report arresting a man they say had a gun loaded with eight rounds as he drove around John Eliot Square in Roxbury on Monday.
Police say officers were dispatched to the square after a report of a guy with a gun in the square.
Upon arrival, officers located [Victor] Vega operating a motor vehicle in the rear of John Eliot Square. Officers made the traffic stop, removed Vega from the motor vehicle and recovered a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield 9mm pistol loaded with eight rounds from the driver’s side floor.
Vega, 29, of Roxbury, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, police say, adding he was also charged with driving with a suspended license.

So, what's the real issue here, unlawful possession or loaded gun?

Yes, in Massachusetts, you cannot just drive around with a gun after you've flashed it at somebody (or even if you haven't if it's not properly stowed), especially if you don't have a license.
"Unlawful possession of a firearm" is the legal term for "being in possession of a gun when you don't have a license for it." Which, yes, is a crime in Massachusetts (under a law that has been upheld by federal courts, even under the Heller decision). Sorry to disappoint any recent arrivals from Texas.
