It's 2021, of course we have to worry about carnivorous squirrels

Squirrel and the vertebra it was munching on

Possinger's before and after shots.

Chris Possinger reports:

Watching my kid at the playground at Boynton and Hall St. in JP and heard a munching sound. Looked over and it was a squirrel munching on a large vertebrae. Called the Staties just in case, but I don't think it's human.

Squirrels gnaw on dear antlers for calcium, I expect that's why this squirrel was chewing a bone.

We can’t blame this on 2021. Squirrels are omnivores but more specifically opportunistic meat-eaters as they typically stick to nuts and berries.

Don’t be afraid unless a blight kills their primary food supply. ;)

That was a squirrel's large vertebrae! They are growing to a huge size AND becoming cannibalistic! It was the Ivermectin that mutated the squirrels. And Trump will be returned to the White House in a few weeks.

We think that is why Shitlist the Squirrel was on our local blue jay mob's shitlist - snatching eggs. Squirrels are well known for this.

Shitlist was on our shitlist due to chewing through our window screen - twice! - and stealing a Goldilox bagel. (we put up new screen and metal grating)

... snatching eggs. Squirrels are well known for this.

As are bluejays, at least according to Audubon.

So not really watching his kid. All for some stupid Twitter points.

Not from Boston, you’re a real jerk.

His kid’s vertebrae would have been next!

No parent is perfect. He’s just an ordinary squirrel.

Squirrels are a thousand times more interesting than kids. The guy couldn't help it.

You should consider watching yourself?

Naw. Fewer opportunities to be an asshole that way.

I had squirrels chew and consume deer antlers I hung outside I suppose to wear down teeth and mostly to ingest essential minerals. They can't afford mineral supplements and always get chased out of CVS.

Of course it may be a serial killer.

Bones don't last long in the woods because squirrels and mice chew them up for the calcium. And yeah, squirrels are not herbivores, and even "herbivores" are rarely vegetarian. Deer will happily snack on meat. So will rabbits. It's just an opportunistic thing. (This isn't meat, mind you -- it's more of a mineral chew.)

I do wonder what the vertebra is from. I don't *think* it's the right shape to be from a deer. It looks about right for a human, unfortunately, but I'm *absolutely* not an expert and there are probably plenty of animals with the same general shape.

(Incidentally, we did have a deer jaw bone show up on our back porch last year here in central Somerville, heavily chewed by squirrels. Not real clear on how that got there.)

I’ve fostered orphaned squirrels and they need bones for calcium and also because being rodents, the bones help keep their teeth from growing too long.

Do the mayoral candidates have a position on this?

Magoo made squirrel stew once. In a pinch Magoo will make it again. Magoo.

So Magoo made Burgoo.

Burgoo.

Stewed Magoo would be more satisfying.

As a kid I could tell that Squirrel Nation and humankind achieved detente eons ago. Sure once in a while a squirrely squirrel might make square hole in a round house but no detentes are perfect.

But bunnies. They proliferate just like...bunnies. There is no accord with them. There have never been SALT talks with them. They pretend to be afraid; but that is to fake out us humans. The bunnies I've seen stand their ground. They even become invisible when they stand still. They don't realize that I can see them but that is because I have visibility glasses that reverses their invisible posture.

That bunny in The Holy Grail was harbinger. They are here; the bunnies from Hades. They're not going anywhere.

And somehow the bunnies have even frightened off their natural predators. Where there are bunnies I do not see coyotes. Where there are coneys I do not see hawks.

What will be the next carnivorous invasive species that seeks to take over? Jackalopes!
