there would only be bubbles from one spot -- but it sounds like the bubbles are from all over. (Unclear, but that's my interpretation.)

Sounds like something natural, though.

is Pointy McPointface, the lovable yet socially-awkward inner harbor bottom-dweller who has adapted to survive off of leftover high-end coffee grounds and discarded West Elm furniture.

Flatulent flounder? Crepetacious crabs? Hey! Who released the Kraken? How about a little warning next time?

Dump trucks used to dump snow from downtown snow removal into the Fort Point channel, between Congress St. and Summer St. I remember seeing all kinds of stuff embedded in the snow, especially after a big storm. There were shopping carts, bicycles, trash receptacles, lumber, and all kinds of trash, big and small.

I believe this practice ended but who knows what the heck is down there? Leaking drums of toxic waste? Dead bodies? Worse?

Actually, if the tunnel were leaking, there probably wouldn't be any bubbles, because the air displaced by the water rushing into the tunnel could more easily escape through the tunnel openings themselves and through the ventilation systems.

More likely it's either caused by some change in the chemistry of the water in the channel, or something has triggered the release of gases from the sediments under the channel.

It seems unlikely that there are methane clathrates there...

How do you know it's not supposed to bubble? Nature works in mysterious ways.

I do believe they are or recently dredged or blasted the harbor. Must have hit an underground air pocket...
