Eternal IHOP
By adamg on Fri, 05/22/2009 - 8:31am
Lisa couldn't be more pleased that an IHOP now exists in Dedham - she had dinner there last night - because it reminds her so much of those long ago days of summer:
... In a couple of months, you'll all head off to college, and into your lives. There'll be heartbreak and disappointment and loss.
But right now, you've got a twenty in your wallet, a Belgian waffle in front of you, and your friends. The future is wide open, and there's four kinds of syrup.
Compare Lisa's Belgian-waffle dinner with what David had for dinner.

David's Dinner
Not to needlessly denigrate someone's choice of foods... Oh, Hell, let's!
It looks as though it were dug up from my backyard and served as found. The fiddleheads look like snails and the lamb tongue like clods of clay. The beans are reasonably pebble-like.
I'm sure it tastes better than it looks - how could it not?
To ensure that I get away with this dumb-ass commentary without having anyone similarly excoriate me, I will not be publishing any photos of the lobster sauce I had last night.

Newsflash
I don't mean to mellow your harsh, Jim, but some people actually do eat food that's dug up from the ground, sometimes even their own gardens. Many popular foods, such as tater tots, funions and little debbie snack cakes actually start out as the roots of plants. It's a fact.
Yuck!
People actually eat things that have spent months encased in dirt? Shouldn't the Department of Public Health be looking into this? I mean, that can't be healthy.
And, not to cast asparagus on your "facts", but... Little Debbie? Have you seen her picture?
Fie upon you for attempting to tarnish her reputation! She would no more use filthy roots in her recipes than All-American icons such as baseball players would use illegal substances to enhance their performances!
Are you a Commie?

Commie?? I live in Cambridge!
Oh yeah. Right.
Anyway, it's clear that the only way to settle this is with a pancake eating contest. Dedham's way too far, how about IHOP in Brighton?
You have an IHOP in Cambridge
It's on Eliot Street in Harvard Square, near the JFK School of Government.
I Think...
... perhaps he was trying to find a good neutral site? If it's in Watertown or Cambridge, one of us would have the home court advantage.
That could actually be kind of fun. I assume we're talking your basic plain pancakes - or maybe, if we want to be radical, buckwheats - and not any of those commie things with "fruit" in them?
Any other U-Hub members interested in joining us? If we get 25 or 30 of you to pitch in, say, $10 - and the loser to write a check for some amount - it could be a fun way to raise a few bucks for a charity. Seriously.
And, just for the record, I can eat me a lot of pancakes :-)

I, too, can eat me a lots of them pancakes.
Whole wheat would be good, it'll make the whole experience more, um, digestible, but I think any toppings will just get in the way of the final count. We should save the fruit for another time, it doesn't grow on trees, you know.
How about $5 per flapjack - loser pays the combined total to the winner's charity, winner picks up the IHOP tab? I'm thinking quantity, not speed, but of course there should be a reasonable time limit and no bathroom visits.
We'll need a judge. Is this Gaffin guy trustworthy and impartial?

It is on
Name the date and time and I'll be there (along with a camera to record for posterity, of course!).
Impartial? You bet. I will admit I once had dinner with Jim and his wife, but I'll set that aside for the greater good of Truth.
Just Back From Memorial Day, So...
... just catching up here.
I think the $5 a pancake is reasonable. Let's do it.
However, I'll ask for a bit of a postponement, until after softball season. Is that OK? I have a hard enough time keeping my weight down enough to play without eating a huge stack of flapjacks some day during the season. August-September?

Charity Flapjack Smackdown, coming this August
August? That's a lot of training time... I'm pretty wide open, maybe a weekday evening, definitely after dark. I think for this purpose, my benefiting charity would have to be the Federation of Mass Farmers Markets http://www.massfarmersmarkets.org/ - I'll set up a Firstgiving fundraising page for them so other UH types can get in on the gluttony, I mean charity.
Flapdown?
Most cool. Once you have a specific date, let me know and I'll start promoting it on my end.
May the biggest stomach win!
I Will Mark My Calendar...
... and be back in touch with you both, for this, first week of August.
You're going to promote it, eh? That means I can't be syruptitious, I suppose.

I suggest....
a media blintz!
You're not going to waffle, IHOPE
But who will bring home the bacon?
your end
...I'll start promoting it on my end.
Temporary tattoo or the real thing?
