Directors of East Boston neighborhood association dissolve group after nobody steps up to help run it

The East Boston Times-Free Press reports that after the Gove Street Citizens' Association's official secretary resigned and nobody volunteered to replace him, the remaining directors realized they'd had enough and quit en masse, dissolving the group.

When I think of Eastie I now think of two things:

A friend once introducing himself as being from Eastie, then to perplexed looks: “the airport” (said with an authentic eastie accent, sorta eh-pwott). He also extolled the virtues of a little local family-owned Italian joint named… Magianos.

And AEG saying in the second debate “all the kids have asthma, what do you expect, living under the ass end of a jet?!”

Long live Eastie, the rose at the ass end of the jets (or something).

THAT'S what you think of when you think of East Boston, rather than a thriving Latino community? How odd. Not to mention a bit insulting. I'm a lifelong resident of East Boston and have never said "eh-pwort" in my life. You're thinking of Tweety Bird. No restaurant called "Magianos either, though you may be thinking of Maggiano's Little Italy in Park Square, which is not East Boston by a longshot. Better luck next time.

but I agree. As a resident for only 12 years I have not encountered any of the stereotypes they referenced.

As to the board....this is my hood, and I attempted to attend these meetings but quickly learned that at least half of the meeting is dedicated to long standing residence complaining about the lack of parking in the city and the new development not solving that problem. I felt that discussion was a waste of my time so I gave up since they didn't want to hear opinions other than their own. I held on for over a year then just stopped going. They are not ill intentioned people but the meetings were not, in my mind, productive.

Rino's , Santarpios, Jevali's, Spinelli's...

Seems odd they would handpick just one Italian spot anyway when East Boston has them coming out of the seams.

And it's been closed and deserted since the beginning of the pandemic with no hint of reopening.

I agree 100%, my partner and I have tried to attend the monthly meetings but the atmosphere not welcoming for people who haven't lived in the neighborhood for at least 10 years. Also over the last year it's become shouting contests between residents and developers.

I’ll take “anons who can’t take a joke for $100, Alex.”

Tbh I didn’t even know about the thriving Latino community, but thanks to your humorless reply I now do.

Eastie is over 50% hispanic/latino. You'd have to have not stepped foot in Eastie in the past 30 years to not know about the thriving Latino community. People might get insulted when a majority of the neighborhood and it's culture doesn't even come to mind.

i don't remember the name of the band, or the song, but I do remember the music video, long, long ago, in which they held up a sign saying "East Boston is not an airport". I always liked that sign. I liked the way they stood up for the neighborhood. I still remember it whenever East Boston comes up.

I live in Cambridge, but "Cambridge is not a university" doesn't have quite the same ring.

The Stompers were great. The song was originally East Boston Girl but the record company, who was trying to push them nationally made them change it, and then the record company fell apart.

Even includes Mary Jo from V66 at the beginning:

Their best song almost made the Top 40 in 83:

I could have sworn they held up a sign, but memory deceives. Maybe i was mixing it up with Dylan and his flashcards at the beginning of Don't Look Back:

The Stompers ain't Dylan, though, and I don't think any one could confuse East Side Girl (or East Boston Girl) with Subterranean Homesick Blues.
