Alleged one-man North End crime spree admits to an armed robbery

Dante Mirabella today pleaded guilty to federal charges that he held up Bob's Grocery on Endicott Street in 2019.

The charges could get him life in prison, in addition to any additional sentences he might get in state court for two other armed robberies around the same time, the US Attorney's office reports.

In US District Court in Boston, Mirabella today pleaded guilty to one count of interfering with commerce by robbery, one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition for the Bob's holdup. His sentencing was scheduled for March 1.

In one week in May, 2019, authorities say, Mirabella used a gun to hold up Bob's, as well as individuals on Commercial Street and Merrimac Street.

Boston Police say they put an end to his crime wave after watching him "engaged in multiple hand to hand drug transactions" on Salem Street and then catching him as a pedaled away on a bicycle.

Honest question, how come these ended up as federal charges and not state ones? Not criticizing, just curious.

Felon in possession of a handgun - the feds love taking those cases, for some reason.

Seems odd that this would wind up a federal case to begin with, with charges like interfering with commerce by robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. They must be really anxious to put this guy away.

I must be tired from watching election returns last night. Every time I see the headline for this in the main page, my brain says "one-armed bandit".
