Amazon dumps bin with 30 packages at wrong Cambridge building; can't be bothered to retrieve the stuff and deliver it to the right place

It never occurred to me that Lily Tomlin's hilarious old "Ernestine the Operator" routines from when the phone company was an all-powerful monopoly could now be applied to Amazon!
What really gets me mad is
What really gets me mad is finding a misdelivered package and it's nothing you want.
I once got an Amazon order
I once got an Amazon order that was correctly addressed to me, and had one item I had ordered, but a bunch of random other things that I was not charged for.
While I appreciate the picker thinking I might need some beard dye to go with my beard trimmer, I'm going to hold off on the Just For Men treatment for now. Even the customer service reps at Amazon weren't sure what happened there. On the plus side a local charity got some quality, if not slightly weird, stuff for men who may want it.

When you don't have your own personal spaceship. Poor Mark Zuckerberg doesn't have the time to vet every driver anymore, he's so embarrassed at his shortcoming as a billionaire on the interstellar front.

I think what happened
Is that Bezos asked Zuckerberg to keep an eye on his company while he was in space, feed the dog, whatever. He really just did this so he could say "while I'm in space", but Mark took it seriously. Naively, he thought this meant delivering the packages himself. It was a bigger job than he expected, and he screwed up a few orders, but really he did okay. People barely noticed. Now Bezos is considering hiring him as a driver, if that Facebook thing doesn't work out.

An enterprising person would've kept this information to themselves and resold every single item in that bin.
The buyers would be compensated and it would only "hurt" Amazon.

this happened to me with one
this happened to me with one package of clothing. Jcrew took responsibility but I had bought things from a sale and it was all gone at that point. They replaced everything with "comparable" items. I actually ended up with a cute silk dress for $20. But then UPS returned my call and told me where the package was. I went over there. The woman was a little skeptical because she thought she was waiting was for UPS, but my driver license matched the address. So I got two packages.
I just return misdirected packages. Once I kept getting stuff for one house and one was like 50 pounds of dog food, so I left a phone number so I could just call if it was something big.
That's surprising
I though the delivery companies wouldn't tell you where the package ended up because they don't want any responsibility for any conflict if you show up at some random persons house asking for something.
it was a local UPS person
When I called I asked for the local delivery center. Maybe she shouldn't have told me but she just looked up the gps location of where it was dropped off.
Years earlier I received heavy iron doorstops from Yield house that were addressed to me. I didn't order them and when I called they said return it. I said that seems like a lot of trouble when I didn't do anything to received them. Then my neighbor accused me of stealing them. I had no idea they were meant for her since my name and addresss were on the packaging.
It's porch pirate season
Suggestion to thwart the porch pirates: if you're buying from Amazon, look into using Amazon Locker. Yes, it's a pain to have to go somewhere to pick up your "delivery", but they have a lot of locations, and it's not a tenth the aggravation of dealing with a stolen package.
If it's not Amazon, I don't know, but I think you can sometimes get a package held by the shipper at a local location and pick it up?
UPS My Choice
Sign up for UPS My Choice. Lets you (to a degree) manage the UPS deliveries to your home. At a minimum you will be aware of what is coming and when to expect it. Along the same lines as the Amazon locker recommended above , My Choice lets you direct a package to a local Access Point (could be your local convenience store). Nothing is perfect given the volume these companies are dealing with; your best bet is learning how best to manage them if you are a higher volume receiver.

Not just Amazon, all
Not just Amazon, all logistics are a mess. We got a package from ups for a previous tenant who moved years ago. I brought it to the ups store to let them know this person no longer lives there and I don't know thier forwarding address. The ups guy said all they can do is give it back to the driver and they'll probably redeliver it to me. I was like, okay, so even though I'm telling you this person moved you're going to drive it back over to me? Like there's no way to return to sender or change an address? Not knowing what else to do I left it there and hoped for the best. Sure enough two days later it shows back up at my house. I just left it out for the porch pirates as a sacrificial lamb.
Seems like a bad idea
Now they're going to keep an eye on your porch, because they 'won' something there. Next time, it could be a thing you ordered.
