Less than model behavior at Allston bar has owners fuming

The Model Cafe in Allston reports that for the past few weekends, somebody's been going into the restrooms and ripping the soap and towel dispensers and other things off the walls and hiding them above the ceiling tiles.

This is not only incredibly annoying to us who work here but also costs the business money. The next step is having an employee stand by the bathrooms and inspect each one as they are used. So if you or someone you know is that person you might want to tell them to stop before we have to have a bathroom monitor.

Maybe have a bathroom concierge? All the high class places have the person that hands you a towel (paper) after you wash your hands.

I haven't been in the Model Cafe in 50 years (yes, it's been around that long) but no one ever called it a high class place.

A bathroom attendant at the Model is the best idea. Please, god, if you exist, let this become a thing. PLEASE.

In a world of amazing jobs that I love that exist but would never want this ranks only slightly below "mopper" at a peepshow.

Sure, "nice" in this instance is a dive bar but it still pisses me off.

Threat of a bathroom monitor should get it to stop. Monitor means you won’t be able to slam nips or hook up in those bathrooms anymore, which is oh so important to the vibe of that bar

I kind of feel like we've gotten a little soft on the definition. I think of it more as a place that's ancient enough to have some of that increasingly rare, old-timey, Old Man Bar kind of flavor, but it isn't really seedy, and the crowd is often thick with clean-cut collegiate types. Even the bathrooms aren't that dire, despite their recent idiot-driven issues.

I still kinda feel as though a proper dive should carry at least a whiff of ambient violence, a place where you need to keep an eye out for potential roughnecks, sharpers and chirping hammerheads. To me, Mo-Dell's seems only cosmetically divey these days.

It definitely used to be. I never go to Allston anymore, but it used to be a hellhole where washed up old punks and rockabilly burnouts went to do coke. Has it gotten cleaned up in the past 15 years?

all my sketchy ex girlfriends would buy coke there from gross Allston lifers.

Have you lived in Allston your entire life by any chance?

long-overdue fresh coat of paint and some new fixtures 12-15 years ago. The aging hipster and rocker sorts are still around, but they feel like a dwindling fraction of the ambiance. The place added bar pies to the menu fairly recently.

No one should want to go to a dive bar. If the place is friendly, welcoming, and/or hip, then it is not a dive.

A dive bar should feel unwelcoming and, as Slim points out, not totally safe. The only people who should feel comfortable at an actual dive bar are the alcoholic regulars and locals. Local, including the sense that maybe you don’t live in the area anymore, but when you’re home and you visit the dive perhaps it’s your dad or uncle Jerry that you find at the bar, or perhaps it’s that guy or gal you knew from high school and only ever see at this particular bar playing Keno and drinking mixed drinks out of a pint glass.

More Triple O’s in Southie, less State Park in Kendall.

Interesting, though, is the etymology of “dive” bars come from NYC establishments that were in subterranean basements that’s man could “dive” down into a place away from the prying eye of people on the surface. In Boston think Daisy Buchanan’s and the Bull & Finch. And, by this definition, State Park.

They make ID scanners, you know. Get those addresses and retaliate with home visits to vandals.

Just don't steal stuff like that other Allston bar owner did.

Make the sign, "Employees must wash hands," a reality.

What happens when they witness a violation? Do they tell on them? Take a picture of them, post it on the wall?

Trash their houses. Hey, they think it's acceptable. Same reason it's okay to defraud a Trump voter.

He would have his thugs rob the patrons' apartments while they were there, or so I was told.

Then they would just have to sequester them until the police arrive.
