Maverick Square market gets approval to sell Central American rums

The Boston Licensing Board today approved a request from Las Palmas Market, 13 Chelsea St., to add spirits to its existing beer and wine offerings.

The market wanted to add "small batch rums" from Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica, to meet demands from its largely Latino market, its attorney, Gene Charny, said at a board hearing yesterday.

Although the license change technically would allow the market to sell any sort of hard liquor, there will be no "Johnny Walker Black or bourbon or vodkas," Charny said. "not your Blanchards or Macy's liquor stores." And, he added, the store will not sell nips.

The mayor's office had backed the request.

As Maverick loses it’s established ethnic communities, the wealthy transients will be able to buy souvenir rums and impress their dinner party guests on what edgy epicureans they are.

Technically speaking there's no difference between Flor de Caña and Johnny Walker, Early Times and Ruble Vodka, so why make a fuss about which exact brands and flavors the market can sell when they have a license to sell all beer, wine and spirits?

Nips I can understand, and those restrictions actually make it into the license, but the rest of it is just on the honor system so I'm pretty sure that hazing the applicant in this way is an unnecessary hurdle.

Sorry if I made it sound that way.

The store's attorney brought it up all by himself as part of his required discourse on the "public need" for extending the license - the store serves a primarily Latino community and he mentioned rum as something the public, in this case, customers, was asking for.

Nobody on the board pressed him on limiting what the store could sell - although had he not mentioned nips, they might have sought to incorporate a no-nips policy because the city officially hates nips with the blinding fury of 10,000 suns.

Meaning in terms of the license? Or the fact that they're all ethanol?
