South Station T stop runs red with blood; two stabbed after argument turns violent

Transit Police report arresting a Mattapan man on charges he plunged a knife into a couple of people on a South Station Red Line platform after failing to convince them of his side in an argument around midnight.

Conroy Byfield, 45, was charged with two counts of assault and battery for the attack, police say, adding that when officers arrived, Byfield was still facing the now bleeding man and woman in "a fighting stance."

Initially it appears there was a verbal confrontation which turned physical at which time Byfield is alleged to have stabbed both the male and the female. Both victims sustained serious but non life threatening injuries and were transported to a local area hospital for emergency treatment.

Innocent, etc.

Do anger management classes work? You can't nurture nature.

Court clinician. There is no evidence for most of them, and people are frequently inappropriately referred without skilled clinician assessment to determine whether it’s an impulsivity/rage kind of issue in the first place. Liberals like the programs though because they feel good about sending people to something that claims to be rehabilitative.

What’s most effective is anti-poverty measures, robust mental health and other health services, and health education following WHO standards (which includes learning about consent and sexism among other marginalizations starting when school starts). In terms of folks who’ve already offended, skilled offender treatment is effective. It’s usually based on DBT, which is an approach in which folks learn that two things can be true at the same time. It undoes the concrete thinking patterns that come with chronic trauma. People learn that someone else can be wrong AND you can walk away and this doesn’t make you a wuss or unmanly. You can have been through a ton of horrible stuff AND you don’t need to let it define you.

Last time I checked, liberals were very much in favor of the things you listed as most effective:

What’s most effective is anti-poverty measures, robust mental health and other health services, and health education following WHO standards (which includes learning about consent and sexism among other marginalizations starting when school starts).

But you only said liberals like anger management programs... because they like to feel like they're helping but don't bother to check on what works. What's the deal?

Your description of what liberals like is odd...

eeka didn't say "...and that's all they like". Not wanting to speak for eeka, I'll leave it at that -- but there's good stuff in there about handling problems in a way that recognizes their complexity, so you might want to reread it.

eeka confirmed that I interpreted them correctly. The context is pretty clear that the paragraph about the correct solutions is separate from and not attributed to liberals and what they like.

eeka is using definitions of liberals and leftists that I don't think most people would agree with or necessarily care about in this discussion, but it's apparently important to them. I guess it's better that they are further to the left of whatever they think liberals are, rather than to the right. I couldn't tell if they disliked liberals because they were more liberal or more conservative than the group as they define it.

you're mixing up liberals and leftists.

Liberals very much like to feel like they're helping without actually looking at research or the lived experiences of the people they're claiming to help.

Drugs root of the problem. Drugs everywhere, massive market for them, causing addicts with no money, beat bags of drugs, and there is nobody more filled with blind rage than a junkie who doesn't get what he wants.

With the exception of some very unfortunate babies, no one is born addicted to drugs. How can drugs be the "root of the problem"?

settled properly by a knife fight, like, "Who is the best Hollywood Batman?" I've scrapped with drunken hooligans that objected to my defense of Adam West and George Clooney, depending on the year. (Just kidding: the best The Batman is of course Robert Pattinson.)

If you want to start a knife fight, that's a great icebreaker.

I wonder what that rhetorical technique is called in debating? And the victims' response?

I mean... YIKES!
Quite pleased this sick individual is in custody. I hope more than anger management courses and probation are punishment for such violence.
