Edwards wins special Democratic state-senate primary, which means she'll be replacing Boncore

Boston City Councilor Lydia Edwards has defeated Revere School Committee member Anthony D'Ambrosio in the Democratic primary to replace state Sen. Joe Boncore in the First Suffolk and Middlesex district (which includes East Boston). With no Republican candidate, that means she will soon move from the City Council to the State Senate.

The City Council will now set a date for a preliminary and final election to fill the two-year term to which she was re-elected just last month.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Lydia Edwards brings to the Senate!

...a well-paid stepping stone to higher office and/or a generous pension. Special elections are expensive, barely noticed, and another chance for Althea Garrison to try to claw her way back into office.

Agree with the Special election being wasteful, which ends up being two elections because of the Preliminary. They should fix that.

We had the chance to fix at least part of the problem and turned it down. We had a ballot question on switching to ranked choice voting (also known as 'instant runoff') and, sadly, it lost.

Now that the city has meaningful influence on city budget, it's a more important job but the special elections stuff is just garbage.
