Oh, hey, those flashing lights at the Chelsea Street Bridge really mean something

Randy Andrews posted video Friday showing how lucky one driver is that the Chelsea Street Bridge lifts its center section straight up, rather than having a more traditional design with two sections that lift up at an angle:

This was HERE?! I saw that yesterday. Honest to Christ thought that the scaffolding at the top would crush the vehicle.

What scaffolding?

What would you call the framework at the top?

the structure above the roadway is connected to the middle section and therefore rises and falls with the roadway.

source: me; i drive across the chelsea st. bridge at least twice on most days.

Rises with the roadway. It is the overall structure that is raised and lowered via cable at the 4 corners.

There's a bridge operator who's going to have some 'splainin' to do. Don't they have cameras to watch the road and sidewalks?

Perhaps planned?

'Splainin' indeed!

I wish they let people stand on the bridge and take the ride.

(Yes, I know why they don't.)

In addition the the 2019 incident Ron mentions we also had the case where the woman was crushed to death on the other bridge a half mile down the street.

I just don't understand how this is even possible. Three major (and one tragic) situations in less than a decades time. When people actively try to end their lives on the Tobin Bridge they built bigger and bigger fences and have tried ways to mitigate the issue. I'm not seeing the same push here.

First you have the human operator who should be able to see these things. Where is the computer back up? When I self check out it knows when I don't put an item down. Room as know how to get around the house. We even have self driving cars. I'm not security expert but I would think putting in a system of sensors or AI tech that smcan scan video feeds shouldnt be impossible. My Google Home knows where I am in the room... It just doesn't make sense
