In-person City Council meeting cut short when audience members refuse to put on masks; meeting resumes via Zoom

Mejia in her office.

Councilor Julia Mejia speaking from her City Hall office after meeting moved from in-person to Zoom.

The City Council was going through its Wednesday routine of discussing matters to be sent to committees for hearings around 1:18 p.m. when Council President Ed Flynn asked people in the audience to put on masks, as required by city ordinance. They refused. Flynn called a 15-minutes recess and asked his fellow councilors to exit the chambers, presumably so City Hall security guards could deal with the covidbreathers.

At 1:48 p.m. or so, councilors switched to Zoom, from their offices, to continue their meeting.

I'm proposing that we use the term Unadaptables for both those who suffer from varying degrees of metathesiophobia and the megaphone people who exploit them.

I also have $100 saying that half of that disruption crew is vaccinated and the other half doesn't understand the concept of public health or looking busy at work on a Wednesday afternoon. Like I don't even want to attend the meetings my employer assigns me to, let alone travel all the way from the suburbs to holler at someone who isn't going to change their mind about something that doesn't affect me. Unless they're being paid to do be there and act the fool.

Also, Massachusetts boasts a 94% of residents who've received at least one dose, so I'm no longer able to concede that the bullhorn/cowbell lady is acting with any good faith whatsoever.

The derogative term 'mouth-breathers' has never been more appropriate as it has been for the past two years.

"covidbreathes". I like that.

Rolls trippingly from the tongue, don't it? Sort of like the virus from the crazy spouts of the un vaxxed.

Did they wear masks into the building to get by Security? Then take the masks off once they were in the chamber?

Sad lack of respect for fellow attendees, city employees and the Councilors.

I am sure they were there to cause trouble.

I could see myself sitting in the audience in that room and if I was far away enough from everyone else considering letting my mask slip a bit for the fresh air. I would also be horrified and would slip it back up and shut up if asked about it though!

These anti-mask people really suck... it's draining just knowing these people do their mini-protests to interrupt City Council meetings.

Someone just slap one of these (expletives) in the face already. It's evident that they've never been hit.

You don't own City Hall, thus, you don't decide whether or not to wear a mask, the workers there do.

City Council meetings aren't very crowded. People sit far apart and councilors themselves aren't masked a lot of the time.

Sure, there are consequences to breaking an establishment's rules, but it's silly to act like it's so important to wear a mask at these meetings.

If the rules weren't being enforced and followed, these same numpties (and people like you) would be complaining about hypocrisy and "rules for us but not for them".

In any case, the real silliness to act like there isn't a global pandemic that killed 15k people last week in the US alone that shouldn't be taken seriously.

You're making up strawmen.

If someone breaks a mask rule or drives 11 miles over the speed limit, they'll get a warning or a citation, and that's it. But getting worked up, joking about slapping people in the face over it, that's not good.

But getting worked up, joking about slapping people in the face over it, that's not good.

So why didn't you reply to someone who said something like that?

Because they were (expletive) asked to do it by the (expletive) people who work there. It doesn't even have to be "Because I said so", it just needs to be "I expect to be comfortable in my workplace, and mask-wearing reduces the flow of airborne pathogens. Do it or go to Marie Curie's grave and argue science with her, you (expletive)."

Seriously, give me the names of these people, so that I can go into their houses and raid their liquor. It's obvious that the notion of property and spaces belonging to others and not to them is not a social construct in which they're genuinely interested in participating, so why not treat them in kind?

City Hall is a space which belongs to all residents of Boston, not just Councilors or City employees. While certain parts of the building are not accessible to the general public for operational or security reasons, the Council Chambers are intended to be a space for the public (and FWIW the architectural design of the building connotes this).

The cause of Marie Curie's death wasn't airborne pathogens so???

A better argument would be that the current law/regulation/policy requires one to wear a mask in that space. Don't like it? Work through the appropriate channels to get that rule changed.

Every time I hear about people refusing to wear masks I'm baffled. It's really sad that people actually continue to fight this with thousands dying every day. Please come back to reality people!!! So so sad!!
