Catenary wires and tracks. Almost as if there was a comprehensive transportation system at some point until they had the great idea to rip it out and replace it with busses running leaded fuel.

But I'm sure when they were taking it out they said it would only be two years or so until they could replace it with something cleaner and better than what was removed.

(Sorry for the off-topic snark, but I'm pissed about the removal of the electric busses in Cambridge. Every Single Time the MBTA removes something, it's for the worse. The electric bus system should be expanded, not eliminated.)

If you were here today, you would be standing right about where that little patch of dirt still is looking south with Beverly Street on your right and North Washington Street on your immediate left. The apartment building with City Winery would be to the right of the photo.

If you were looking south there would be that last piece of the Greenway that was supposed to have a Museum of The City of Boston on it.

The land in the right of the photo is about to be torn up for the Orange and Green Lines so this is 1896-1897.

Since Kenmore Square really didn't have any development until 1900 or so, it is weird that you would think a picture with 1870's and earlier developed buildings would be Kenmore.
