Fed-up Boston librarians to hold rally against covidbreathers

WFXT reports BPL librarians are planning a "unity gathering" to support children's librarians at the Copley Square and Hyde Park libraries who have had to deal with wide-mouthed adults who insist they and their spawn have the right to breathe at other patrons in the children's room.

Sorry about that.

One of the anti-maskers poured gasoline on the bust of Maya Angelou at the Copley branch…as if we didn’t already know that the anti-mask dirtbags had significant overlap with white supremacists.

Absent further proof one of the "parents" (some of whom showed up in the children's room without any kids, which at other times might seem kind of creepy) did the gasoline pouring, I'm willing to accept the possibility it was just an unfortunate timing coincidence involving one of the other characters one can often find at Copley.

…and of course I respect your fairness, but “coincidences” are often a result of planning. My personal quota of benefits of the doubt has been depleted since 2019.

.. showed up in the children's room without any kids, which at other times might seem kind of creepy...

It still seems creepy.

up
Voting closed 0

Is it creepy to go to a children’s room to pick out books for kids that aren’t with you?

up

But some of the libraries require adults in children's sections without children to check in and explain what they're doing there.

up
Voting closed 0

They make you show ID at Chuckie Cheese (or they used to) if you show up sans children.

up
Voting closed 0

Doesn't allow adults without at least one child in their party. They have at times held "adult night" once a month or so.

It's ridiculous though. It isn't like adults who aren't with kids are somehow a threat while adults who are with kids are magically safe. Also, in my pretty extensive experience spending time in the LEGO fandom, families with Legoland-age kids aren't really the ones spending tons of money on LEGO. Young (and often neurodivergent) adults without children are the ones able to spend huge chunks of their paychecks on the architecture sets and whatnot.

IIRC, the Childrens' Museum in Acton requires that adults be accompanied by children. The reasoning is pretty obvious.

The least effective protection from covid is cheap masks yet people treat them like they are space suits.

up
Voting closed 0

If it was about protection you would just wear an N95 mask and try to stay away from them. The cloth masks still reduce the spread potential by more than 50% with omicron so it's actually about these selfish dingbats insisting that they have the right to potentially infect more people.

up

The least effective protection is NO masks and the rational ones are trying to put an end to this nightmare despite the efforts of these human anchors who seem determined to drag this thing on forever.

The only way to not get hit by a car is to never cross the street. Risks need to be weighed.

up
Voting closed 0

Is to never leave the house and live alone.
And people wearing cheap face masks touch the mask and their face 50 percent more than.if they were maskless.
A vaccine, social distancing and washing your hands are the best measures.
I wear a mask because those are the rules but I dont think a cheap paper mask is protecting me.
Even some of the mask rules make little sense.

Moving the goalposts, all or nothing thinking, straw men, made up statistics. I don’t have the time or energy to debunk your nonsense claims. Other can feel free to if they wish, but I suspect it’s a waste of time.

Perfectly accurate assessment of a glass-navel comment.

Three things:

1. Growing up the library was incredible. So much information to be vacuumed up. I wish I had grabbed some of the old slate floor of the Adams Street branch when it was replaced with the new building. I went back to Adams Street in my late 20's and still felt intimidated by the staff I remember as a kid. Thank you librarians.

2. BPD - Perhaps you should maybe crack a skull or two on these people who are being aholes. Reportedly someone poured gas on a bust of Maya Angelou at the main library. That's, um, not good, or legal.

3. As a teenager, the creep factor was bad enough at the main library. Don't these idiots know that filming people, especially kids, might get a parent who doesn't follow the Marquess of Queensbury rules, place them into an ICU (the irony)?

I think you have a deep misunderstanding of what cops think their job is in 2022. Or where their sympathies lie in a "someone poured gasoline on a statue of a prominent black person" situation.

Then again, 22 months ago you supported the suggestion by someone physical threatening of a Boston City Councilor and his property for just representing his constituents.

Go away dork.

a group that is opposed to masking, vaccines, and diversity

emphasis mine

It's a single quote from the library side, but are you telling me these people are legitimately opposed to diversity?

Whether or not I agree or disagree with someone on their thoughts on COVID related measures, if you've positioned yourself as anti-whatever we want to call it related to COVID, and also anti-diversity, you're telling me you are not a good person and your thoughts on everything are likely not so good.

There are just some phrases you need to fit in to describe your opponents.

I saw in passing a report coming out of western Massachusetts. A middle school principal quit a few months after being appointed. One of the tipping points was being called a white supremacist. That white supremacist was a one Michelle Hernandez, because of course she is a white supremacist.

I'm not familiar with that particular situation, but you don't have to be white to support white supremacist structures.

I would easily argue that none of the people you list are white supremacists. There may be other labels that could be put on them, but to claim that these three believe in the supremacy of the white race is laughable, mainly because none of them have ever stated that they are inferior to white people.

But if we want to return to the point at hand, while these people have certainly proven themselves morons, I don't believe that their manifesto or rallying cry has anything to do with "diversity," either pro or con. Covid seems to be their only issue.

…and launder overtly white supremicist talking points through their platforms, which all three have done, and post white supremicist memes to their social accounts, “moron” is a woefully inadequate moniker for such a group, irrespective of racial identity.

Domenech is a Spanish last name and Ben, the publisher of the white supremicist trash site The Federalist and host on white nationalist propaganda network Fox News, proudly touts Cuban heritage.

Without knowing anything about Michelle Hernandez, printing someone’s last name is not a cogent argument agiainst the possibility that the person supports white supremacy anymore that saying Michelle Malkin doesn’t support white supremacy because, well, look at her.

How the concept of "white supremacy" has been so watered down.

I mean, I guess it's good that so few people believe that white people are inherently superior to other races that now the term can be applied to the other side of political debates, but honestly, Michelle Malkin? Give me an example of when she has declared that Europeans are superior to all other peoples on the planet.

Admittedly, I largely lost track of Malkin 8-10 years a ago, but she is squarely in the pro-MAGA camp, a virulently white supremacist identity, and she works for News Max, another white nationalist propaganda outfit.

She is complicit with white supremacy. But that wasn’t my point.

My point is that it is insufficient to point to someone’s surname or racial identity as an argument that they couldn’t possibly be complicit and supportive of white supremacy. Trump aid Stephen Millier is Jewish and he is about as white supremacist-y as you can get without wearing a red arm band and shouting “white power.”

Edit: Serendipity, or perhaps serveilence algorithms, pushed this gem into my Twitter feed. Here’s Michelle Malkin speaking at next weeks America First PAC conference. America First is well documented as being far right and Nazi adjacent. It was also a major player in funding the insurrection. She is on a slate that includes noted white nationalists as Gavin MacInnes, Nick Fuentes, Baked Alaska, and Steve King.

By 2045 we will be a majority-minority nation. We’re losing. And it’s the same trend that you see across the world. I talked about that. So called great replacement theory that all of the uh, open borders and types are trying to scare people away from contemplating. Yeah. Think about it and realize it. Do the math.

(source)

I'd say if you think the majority of Americans being non-white is "losing", that's a pretty strong argument that being white is "winning"...

unless a person has stated an abhorrent view in unequivocal terms – i.e. i believe white people are superior to all other people – then they cannot be described as a “white supremacist”. fine.

so i think what you’ve laid out is quite clear, but you won’t convince Waquiot or any other centrist with this line of thinking.

You can be opposed what she (or any of the black people listed above) believe, and that's probably a good thing, but that quote is not an example of white supremacy. Is it nationalism? Most definitely, and feel free to oppose that, but supremacy is a very different thing than nationalism.

...from carrying all that water for white supremacists? Jesus, dude. "Oh no, white people are going to be the minority!" is classic white supremacy. It's on the greatest hits album. I'm pretty sure the Lee Atwater estate is still cashing royalty checks from it.

And saying white nationalism and white supremacy is "not the same" is an academic argument on par with "if it doesn't come from a certain region in France, you can't call sparkling wine 'Champagne'." Sure, you are technically correct, but the Venn Diagram is almost a complete overlap. White supremacy doesn't always come neatly packaged under white hoods and robes.

Quibble with the differences between white nationalism vs. white supremacy if you want; the rest of us see it clearly for what it is. Join us.

I give a rats ass about either white supremacists or white nationalists? What I do care about is how phrases get thrown around willy nilly with no regard to what they mean. And, no, it's not like quibbling about sparkling white wine and where it is grown. It's akin to calling all white wine champagne because they all get you drunk.

But yet again, let's get this back to the original point. There's been nothing to show that these anti-masking morons are against "diversity," whatever is meant by that, yet the charge is made, because it's the rage to throw tags like that on people, like calling black people white supremacists. That makes woke white people feel good about attacking their ideas. Again, it just shows that people don't truly know what white supremacy or white nationalism mean and how they are manifested differently. The latter has no problem with black people being around, as long as they are in a subservient state, while the latter would very much prefer a homogeneous society. Both might be horrible ideologies, but much like the ideologies of communism and fascism, though the might seem the same to many, they are very different.

"It's impossible for those people to be white supremacists because of their racial identity."

My argument is that they use the exact same language, the exact same not-so-vaugue dog whistle talking points, openly support and promote, and share speaking engagements with white supremacists, therefore they support and promote white supremacy. I am using their text, speech, and actions as evidence to support my position. What difference does it make if they don't believe that they are inferior to white people if they are laundering the exact same talking points as white supremacists through the words they say and write?

...people don't truly know what white supremacy or white nationalism mean and how they are manifested differently. The latter has no problem with black people being around, as long as they are in a subservient state.

So if the Black people were in a subservient state, that would have to mean that the white people maintained some sort of "supremacy"? Do I have that correct?

i would call the will to think critically about the winks and nods these people use to push the same white supremacist rhetoric, just wrapped in more universally palatable language.
