Province Street becomes a New York side street

Province Street in downtown Boston with New York cabs

Matthew Broude shows us Province Street downtown, as crews get ready for a scene in a movie called "The Holdovers," in which Boston once again stands in for New York (hence the yellow cabs, of course) and Paul Giamatti plays a Deerfield Academy teacher everybody hates.

All that lovely coal burning and low-grade fuel oil burning in the winters used to add to the gray coating on the snow.

Even in the 1980s the air and grime were depressingly foul toward the end of the winter. I never under stood what that "hazy shade of winter" was until I moved east, and now you don't see it anymore.

So for 56-80 million dollars a year we get to have studios use Boston as a stand in for NYC.

That Sam LaGrassas sign did me in, I need to head in soon for one of their sandwiches.

I wasn't sure if LaGrassas had survived the pandemic, sure hope they did, because their sandwiches rock.

My wife loves the place and went in for sandwiches around Christmas.

LaGrassa's pastrami, and swiss, on rye. My favorite sandwich ever.

Does anyone in New England make pastrami that good? Even Rein's or Katz's?

Sam LaGrassa's makes pastrami better than the late, great Carnegie Deli. Each and every time, I got the Pastrami Po'Boy, with a half sour pickle and steak fries. Last time I was there was November 2020, when it was warm and I could eat outside. Mamaleh's over in Kendall Square is OK, but they smoke their pastrami and corned beef; it's good, but not as good as Sam LaGrassa's.

Howie Carr is a proud Deerfield grad.

The movie seems to be primarily set at Deerfield. Why do they need NYC?
