Roslindale to get Popeye's, but where?

UPDATE: One commenter says it'll be in the strip mall on American Legion Highway, the one by all the flower places and across from the KFC, not the one with the Stop & Shop.

Turns out that a couple months ago, the fried-chicken chain posted a Monster.com ad that started:

Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits with over 1600 restaurants nationwide is looking for experienced management for its newest restaurant opening in Roslindale ...

Then, earlier today, Toyuwa Newton tweeted:

Can someone tell me why my people are so excited about a Popeye's fried chicken joint opening up in Roslindale?

Anybody know where? The new old Stop & Shop mall on American Legion?

Bad news, we all get fatter. Good news, fried chicken and mashies with gravy.

As for fatter, going to Popeye's is one way that I can get some bike miles out of my boys. Burn it to earn it.

'Course, you'll have to brave good old Boston drivers and weird lane markings - as well as the mystical intersection of Cummins and American Legion and Canterbury to get there.

When I lived in Georgia, I was told that Chick-fil-A was fast food for the foreman at the shop, and Popeye's was fast food for the guys who worked for him. Apparently a social divide that is not apparent without the Southern eye.

So the *other* mall on American Legion, by Mattapan. Thanks.

That seems waaay off the beaten path and doomed to fail. Wouldn't Rozzie Square or Forest Hills (or even Centre St, West Roxbury) have been a better choice?

One might ask the same thing of where many Popeye franchises are located ... or any other thriving ethnic restaurant for that matter. What may seem to be off the beaten path for a restaurant that doesn't have such a loyal customer base may actually be conveniently located to their target market.

True, there's not a lot of foot traffic there, but it's not off the beaten path for all the people who shop there, which, based on the number of stores there is quite a few (and let's not forget all the flower places). Based on what's already down there, a Popeye's would fit right in - that stretch has a McDonald's, a Simco's (world's longest hot dogs, natch), a Wendy's, a Chinese restaurant and, yes, a KFC (along with the immortal Baby Nat's Fruitland).

It's like our very own mini-Rte. 9!

just seems strange to put something like this in a place where nobody walks and that isn't on a bus route. Someone in another comment mentioned Grove Hall, which would be an excellent place for this. (Mattapan Square would be another good choice.)

As for the florists, aren't they mostly there to serve the many surrounding cemeteries?

Just not one that most UHubbers might ever take: The 14, connecting Heath Street and Rozzie Square via Dudley and Grove Hall.

As for the florists, they sell a lot of potted plants and stuff for gardens - it's where we go for stuff like that. City Farms is particularly cool for gardening (as was the place that got torn down to build the Wendy's, sniff).

but that's not much of a bus route (doesn't run after 8 pm, doesn't run on Sundays, hourly service most of the day). Certainly not compared to Grove Hall where oodles of buses go by every hour at all times of the day and night.

What do busses have to do with Popeye's Chicken? People will drive there, like they drive everywhere else. It's at a shopping plaza with a big parking lot.

You're welcome to open up a business in Grove Hall if you'd like.

...on the Orange Line.

I've been fairly successful at cutting red meat and poultry out of my diet (at least when not on the road), but Popeye's would be a definite threat.

Their fried chicken, dirty rice, and buttermilk biscuits are the Food of the Gods.

Many people scowled when they killed the Orange Line extension past Forest Hills. But now we can appreciate their foresight!

P.S: Take the OL to Haymarket, transfer to the Rt. 111 bus and head over to Pollo Campero in Chelsea if you haven't already. :)

I would vote for that extension in a heartbeat, even if it would run through my backyard, as I do live along the Needham line. Sure it would change the neighborhood but at this point I think it would be a change for the better since things seem to have stalled out here.

Arborway, I've never heard of Pollo Campero, but I'll take your recommendation! (Chelsea is underrated for food, IMHO. There's a place there that serves the best steak tips... Er, when I was eating lots of red meat.)

Whatever happened to the theoretical Popeye's at Blue Hill Ave. and Washington St. that had all kinds of "Popeye's COMING SOON" signs? This was like a year ago, and now the signs are gone. It was right on a route that I drove right around dinner time at least once a week, and I would have been damn excited if it had opened.
