On the Sudbury Street side. Mike Saccone reports one worker is dead. Other workers are accounted for. Roads around the area are shut. Video of the scene.

"We saw multiple floors come down," Emily Maher of WCVB reports.

The garage was in the process of being torn down for a new building as part of HYM's Bulfinch Crossing project.

The T had already shut Haymarket station and was running substitute bus service, to allow for the weekend demolition work.

Heard a huge extended collapse several minutes prior to emergency vehicles arrived. Awful, condolences to the deceased’s family.

BFD Comm Dempsey stated on TV that a bobcat operator with a jackhammer attachment was working to demo an upper floor and got too close to the edge. The level on which the bobcat was working was compromised and fell several stories.

Word on some MBTA Facebook groups that are frequented by employees is now saying the tunnels may be compromised and shuttles will remain in place until at least Monday.

The Haymarket station was closed for the demolition efforts on weekends in case something like this happened with substitute shuttle buses in place. So the OL and GL shuttles will continue. No formal word from MBTA as yet.

Traffic downtown was pretty bollixed up and remains so. Cascading affect.

That job has looked sketchy from the get go. At the top floor on Congress at Sudbury, they have single sheets of plywood with visible gaps to prevent chunks of concrete from falling to the streets and sidewalks below. Who did the planning here, the guys who designed the tunnel ceiling system? Don't worry, it will be fine. Hurry up and get it done before Monday.

This is why the professionals are making decisions and thankfully you are not.

My thoughts are with the worker’s family. Tragic.

Where did I say the T shouldn’t be closed? Stop putting words in my mouth.

No one should die at work. I hope this is throughly investigated and the company is held responsible for any wrong doing (this doesn’t seem to always happen in this city with some notable repeat offenders.

Most of all I hope the city, state, and feds put pressure on these companies to actually ensure nothing like this ever happens again.

Or are they too busy power tripping over wrong restaurants?

Since you're "notfromboston" and aren't familiar with the city or state, what is your hang up with Boston's Mayor? What's different about her from, say, Marty Walsh?

I'm not sure what a "wrong restaurant" is but if you are talking about inspections of restaurants for code compliance then you would be asking about the Commissioner of ISD, or the ISD Deputy Building Commissioner? Or the Assistant Commissioner of Building & Structure?

One of those 3 people is the department head and would be the superior to the Assistant Commissioner of the Health Division, but the building division that inspects structures for building code compliance have little to nothing to do with the oversight of day-to-day operations of restaurants in Boston...

Or are you talking about Licensing decisions? The Licensing Board is an entirely separate entity from Inspectional Services. Or if this is somehow about the outdoor dining rules, it appears from those guidelines that ISD is really only involved in decisions regarding outdoor food prep/cooking and if heaters/generators are being requested.
