Police say officers trying to arrest one man on gun charges in Mattapan surrounded by unruly crowd; wind up arresting seven people, seizing seven guns

Boston Police report officers arrested seven people and seizing seven guns at Elizabeth and Astoria streets in Mattapan last night after gang-unit officers arrived there last night in search of one Brockton man they believed was in possession of a gun.

By the time the area was cleared out, police had called in backup officers from across the city and shut Norfolk Street between Morton and Babson streets to try to restore order.

Police say gang-unit officers arrived at 17 Elizabeth St. around 6:15 p.m. looking for Tyshawn Cater, 20, of Brockton, who they say tried to run away after tossing a gun into a parked car. Police say officers quickly nabbed him and the gun. But then:

As the officers attempted to secure the suspect for transport, a large and unruly crowd began to gather around the arresting officers. Citywide units were called to help secure the scene at which time, six other firearms were located in the immediate area leading to the arrest of three more adult male suspects on firearm related charges. Three other adult male suspects on scene were placed in custody on charges of Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.

Police say all the seized guns were loaded, with between 5 and 29 bullets in them.

Arrested:

  • Tyshawn Carter, 20, of Brockton for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Per the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday. He has a prior gun conviction.

Cheshire, 27, of Stoughton, for unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a high-capacity feeding device, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and possession of Class A drugs. Worst part is they’ll be let free after being caught with illegal guns! Mind boggling…

It should be in the future.

Get out of the cruisers and put down the phones, boyos. This shows that with just a smidgen of planning, you can get several illegal weapons off the street in no time.

Glad to hear those weapons are off the street and no one was hurt.

Unlawful possession of a gun will get them all mandatory prison sentences, right?

...mean that you would suffer some truly dreadful punishment, no one would risk getting caught with one.

Life without parole is horrible but we still catch murderers.
Some people don't obey laws.
It's not good when courts are lenient when sentencing law breakers..

Gang units make a difference and anyone talking of disbanding them or the police should realize they are part of a systemic problem that consistently keeps only certain neighborhoods unsafe.

Gun laws and sentencing should be more strict for illegal gun possession. The maximum is 2 years in prison and most don’t see even close to that. Locking up a 21 year old for 6 months will not deter that person from doing the exact same thing again, especially if they feel like they don’t have much to lose.

“Possession of an unlicensed firearm in your home or business is a misdemeanor in Massachusetts (MGL ch. 269, s. 10(h)(1)). It can be punished by up to two years in the House of Corrections (jail) and a $500 fine.”

It should be a minimum of 5 or 10 years, not a maximum of 2 years. The lack of proper sentencing keeps criminals active and innocent people in danger.

I agree that revolving door justice is no justice. Two years in jail for possession would surely make an impression on a lot of people. (I agree that 6 months probably just gives them time to get even more angry for when they get out.)

I'd hate to see an 18 year old get 5 years for possession. With that record, they'd probably have a tough time getting any decent job and at age 23 they aren't likely to head back to school. I don't have the answer, but I think more appropriate sentencing within the current limits might help more than longer sentences.

Maximum sentences are rarely given, especially to first time offenders. The law needs to be rewritten with a minimum that matters. I could care less if an 18 year old decides to knowingly make a decision that risks the lives of other people and then gets locked up for it. I too made dumb decisions at 18 years old, but I knew what lines not to cross because I didn’t want to go to prison.

Weak laws keep only certain neighborhoods in danger and it keeps systemic gun violence alive and well. Honestly, society at large doesn’t care about shootings in these neighborhoods and the problem is systemic.

This website is actually a decent example of that. Look at the comments hating on Frank Baker numbering 5-10 times more than articles about assaults on police officers or entire armories being found in Mattapan. Today’s political climate prevents real action and change from taking hold.

I am a shooting survivor, more than once. People deserve to feel safe where they live and work.

Here in the United States of America cruel and unusual punishments for crimes are forbidden. Something like chopping your trigger finger off or chopping off your gun hand is blocked by the Eight amendment of the US Constitution.

I still want to know what happened to the one year mandatory sentence rule for illegal gun possession in Massachusetts. Was it ruled Unconstitutional?

c-section here seems to gotten more conservative over the years, I have grown to not take the cops version for absolute truth.

It's not clear from the write up why Tyshawn was approached in the first place, plus I thought it was deemed legal to run from cops who jump out at you?

Sounds like the neighborhood came out to protect the kid. What was the initial reason for the stop?

Sad day for all, especially if there was no crime to initiate everything.

The Gang Units were looking for one particular suspect, who they located, who then attempted to flee, tossing a gun in the process. The ensuing upset led to six other guns, all unlawfully possessed per the write-up, being taken off of the streets. How is this a 'cops do bad things sometimes so I don't really trust the narrative' type of situation?

I'm just glad that no one was shot in the process, seems like it was probably an incredibly hectic scene.

Is you siding with a criminal with a prior gun conviction and anyone saying otherwise must mean they are conservative. Get out of your bubble and stop contributing to November’s (and beyond) decimation of the Democratic Party.

Public safety should be a priority for democrats as well and they seem to be against providing this service to the most vulnerable neighborhoods.
