Man charged with selling drugs right outside Mass and Cass shelter

Boston Police report officers arrested a man outside the city shelter at 112 Southampton St. after "they observed him engage in a hand-to-hand drug transaction" Tuesday morning.

Police say Neftali Manso, 53, was arrested around 10:40 a.m. and that officers retrieved two bags containing what officers believed to be fentanyl, some cash, and a BB gun that looked like a Glock from his pants.

He is charged with trafficking Class A drugs, distribution of Class A drugs and possession of crack with intent to distribute, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Nothing has changed down there for the exception that the tents are gone. Southampton Street is a mess.
This situation was created by city government. The locating of centralized services in this area has created the horror show that now exists. It's time for the city to move these services to scattered locations around the city.
This is also a regional problem. Many of the addicts aren't Boston residents. I don't really see much in the way of the help from the surrounding cities and towns.
This has gone on too long. Lots of blame all around. Both in the past and presently. I just really hope that things start to improve, and these unfortunates get some real help.
But for the ''Grace of God..."

To be fair.. those services have been there for a very long time. I'd almost want to say long before the heroin epidemic existed. So maybe going back to the 90s. I don't think city leaders knew that back then.

Of course no excuse for it now, its been this bad for a while. Do something.

I agree this is a regional problem and needs to be dealt with that way. If I was a Boston resident, I'd be simmering mad that chunks of my tax dollars are being used to help people from towns who don't want to help them. Its good to help people, not saying that, but other cities & towns where they clutch pearls at 'treatment centers near them' now need to pony up and help.

Sadly its gonna take the legislature to smack those towns into line and pony up.

Boston can't provide services for all the other cities and towns who ship us their addicted fathers, mothers and children they have no time for. Between that and their lack of multi-family housing and affordable units, Boston not only provides the tax money to fix their roads and bridges, but subsidizes a very sanitized existence (of course I know there are lots of poor towns out there who are doing the best they can and I don't mean them). Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center) has been the last place of refuge for many unfortunate souls dating back to 1864, the various services grew up around them over time out of convenience and the fact its so hard to site those uses outside areas that don't already have them.

Having biked down just two blocks of that street last Friday night (coming home from a performance at the Strand Theatre), I can confirm that it is very sketchy. Very few streets or neighborhoods make me nervous, but this one did and I was glad to get past it as soon as possible.

For anyone who passes regularly through this part of the city, this sounds about as shocking as a headline saying “ Woman walks out of Star Market with two bags full of grocery”.

Who can afford two bags at Star's prices?
