Jamaica Plain progressives ponder what to do when both candidates for DA are flawed

Leaders of JP Progressives, which endorsed Ricardo Arroyo for Suffolk County DA earlier this month, report they spent more than two days this week trying to figure out what to do after news broke of the sexual-assault allegations against him.

On the one hand, the steering committee wrote members last night, those are serious and potentially disqualifying allegations. On the other hand, the committee continued, there are some serious questions about how details of BPD investigations - which never led to formal charges - got leaked to the Globe. And let's not forget acting DA Kevin Hayden's other possible ethical issue, involving that off-duty Transit Police cop, they write.

We are deeply concerned about the allegations in both cases and in no way want to diminish the seriousness of the situation. But these are the two candidates we have. Many voters have already submitted ballots by mail, and early voting begins this weekend.

Given where we find ourselves and the information currently available to us, we believe that the best and possibly the only thing we can do is to look directly at the policy statements of each candidate to guide our decision.

And on that basis, the committee says, it is standing by its endorsement of Arroyo, because Hayden looks set to roll back many of the initiatives put in place by former DA Rachael Rollins.

WBUR summarizes the race: Suffolk County DA race turns nasty. Both Hayden and Arroyo face questions.

GBH reports City Councilor Frank Baker wants to use the council's subpoena power to get documents related to the Arroyo investigation.

Except when they’ve (plural) accused your candidate.

Where in this article does it suggest that anyone is doubting these women’s claims? Or not taking them seriously?

Exactly. They take it very seriously but some people have already voted so let's look at the candidates policy proposals.

Exactly but this is the narrative and catch phrase the Hayden supporters, led by none other than Councilor Erin Murphy's sister Darragh and her many sock accounts, have adopted.

It is the same 2-3 accounts tweeting either "believe all women" or "rape" at various city politicians. It is childish and pathetic.

Darragh has ridiculous integrity. She has been a fierce feminist for decades.

You appear to be seconds from "she was asking for it" defense for Rapper Ricky. Grow up.

Darragh? That Darragh? The one caught funneling tens of thousands to herself in the 90s, the one who ran an organization claiming that Obama’s primary win in 2008 was fraudulent and Hillary voters should vote McCain, the one whose Twitter indeed retweets lots of racist sock puppets?

That Darragh? That racist, old Boston, “busing is bed!” “exam schools are for white kids” Darragh?

You’re supposed to put a “/s” after the “ridiculous integrity” so we know you’re being sarcastic.

Therefore she has no credibility with Rapping Ricky. Is that the logic?

The fact that women, especially elected women are still supporting a person who would be just anybody except for his family's name, with these allegations makes them no better than the people who were supporting Brent Kavanaugh.

You are an enabler.

You’re big mad, Costello! Darragh Murphy is trash and there’s no need to defend her. Arroyo’s problematic, but he’s running against hundred dollar Hayden, beloved by shitty cops everywhere.

I’m disappointed in Arroyo and his ardent supporters this week. I had planned on voting for him, now undecided. Disappointed in our choices for such an important position.

Not sure how to interpret this advice since neither woman ever publicly accused him of anything and one of them is even endorsing him.

between taking a victim at their word when they disclose to you that they've been assaulted or abused and thinking rationally about leaked reports of alleged assaults that were (apparently) properly reported to authorities and (presumably) investigated appropriately & adequately, and then closed without charges being filed 15-17 years ago.

There's a lot to unpack from the reporting on this story, and there's likely far more we don't (or don't yet) have access to that would give a fuller picture.

With that said, there's some striking inconsistencies between Arroyo claiming he never knew he had been investigated for alleged crimes and law enforcement claiming that he was contacted, interviewed and informed of the allegations when they occurred. I don't see how he's telling the truth about that, unless someone else is lying about him being informed at the time.

Do you believe the woman who said that she wanted no part of this, that Arroyo didn’t assault her, that she was contacted in July by a former BPD detective turned private eye working for Hayden who promised that she’d be part of a scandal back in.

Believe all women when they ask to be believed, not when the scumbag DA decides to use their story to attack his opponent.

... is a pretty serious reason to vote against a candidate.

The DA who leaked the story or the lying, serial rapist candidate running for DA?

Anyone still standing behind, voting for, and endorsing an absolute piece of shit like Ricardo Arroyo can fuck all the way off.

I’d say the same of anyone supporting Kevin Hayden, friend to crooked cops everywhere. But I get that giving a pass to shitbag cops is a feature, not a bug to Hayden supporters.

Or electing a "Progressive" candidate cause you know, a few cops?

Wow.

I guess the lust for power by the JP Mafia knows no limits.

The Globe and other media outlets report the road rage incident occurred in the town of Milton.
Why would the Suffolk county DA investigate an incident that started in Norfolk County?
