Man tries to walk across Expressway, makes it halfway, then is hit by an SUV and dies, police say

Update: Victim identified as Mark McAuliffe, 49, whose last known permanent address was in Malden.

State Police report a man trying to walk across I-93 near South Bay made it across the outbound side and the median OK, but as soon as he jumped a barrier onto the inbound side was hit by a Highlander and thrown back onto the outbound side, suffering fatal injuries, around 9:40 p.m. on Saturday.

The Toyota operator, a 53-year-old man, stopped immediately and called 911 to report the crash and was cooperative with investigating Troopers. At this time there is no indication that the operator was driving in a reckless manner or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The victim had no identifying information in his possession.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports the man was 49 and that his identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Two lanes southbound were still closed through Dorchester at about 12 last night. I was afraid it was something like that. I hope the person can be identified and family located.

We don't know the facts of this terrible tragedy. But the location, behavior, and lack of any ID on the victim suggest this could be a Mass and Cass kind of incident.

It's really a wonder that there aren't more pedestrian deaths in the areas between Cass and the JFK T than there are. A trip thru Andrew Square after dark requires constant vigilance ahead for wandering or stumbling or fallen people in the roadway. It's almost surprising that there is not someone getting hit every couple of days.

This sort of thing happens fairly regularly, and in places not near Mass & Cass. There was one on 495 within the last week. Whether it's a matter of substance-related impairment, or a form of suicide is an open question.

Mass and Cass kind of incident

What the hell does that mean? Is that now an official cause of death?

Why would anyone try to cross 93? I drove that route daily and can only imagine the guilt/trauma I’d have if I was behind the wheel.

I once got rear ended while traveling at the speed limit by a guy who ignored the car ahead of him. (Center lane) I used to travel on that road several times a week and almost every day there will be the signs of a collision in one of the directions. Between the traffic, the width of the road, and the curve, it’s bad news. I can’t think of a worse place to try and cross on foot. I feel bad for both parties.

I feel sad also but there are easier ways to get to Southie from South Bay without trying to cross the highway. We'll never know why he did it that way unfortunately.
