Ukrainian bakery opens in Brighton

Sisters Ilona and Irina Znakharchuk this week opened Solodko Boston, a Ukrainian bakery and patisserie, at 38 Brooks St. in Brighton, where the Boston Crust pizza place used to be.

Ilona started the business in 2019 while a sophomore at Boston College, according to the shop's Indiegogo page:

After visiting her home country of Ukraine, she realized that the Boston dessert and cake scene were lacking in high-end luxury desserts. With support from her roomates, she started an Instagram page where she began showcasing her desserts. Before long, Ilona was known as "the cookie girl" on campus, who delivered macarons and other pastries to students and professors every weekend!

Don't let this amazing food disappear from Brighton like the lost gems of the Polish Triangle. And look what happened to Chinatown. Eldo bakery and so many beloved businesses and their owners priced out by the wealthy movers and shakers gobbling up all the real estate with money to burn.

Did something happen to the Polish Triangle? Last I checked, Cafe Polonia, the Baltic Deli, DJs, and Euromart were all still there.

The Polish people however sold the houses which they bought for $20,000 for $1.7M and decamped to Hanover and Scituate.

Great! I love finding new Eastern European food places!

Their website isn't up yet. What are their hours, and what's on the menu? I'm particularly interested in savory baked goods, and very traditional ethnic sweets (rather than high-end pastries that could come from any bakery).

But they didn't call it Savory Boston for a reason.

Ok, I didn’t know what “solodko” means. Though there are some croissants on their Instagram.

There's a Ukrainian church up the hill on the other side of Hyde Park Avenue.

And there's another Ukrainian church not that far away (one's Ukrainian Orthodox, the other Ukrainian Catholic).

that section of Boston - along the Rozzi/JP border - had a large population of Ukrainian heritage. My former landlord and others from the neighborhood would walk to Church. If I recall they were on the Byzantine calendar.
